Arbor, 9-15m high. The bark is gray and smooth. The leaves are simple pinnate compound, alternate; 12-20 cm long; 5-7 leaflets, nearly leathery, long elliptic or long elliptic ovate, 5-12 cm long and 2.5-5 cm wide, apex acuminate, base cuneate or obtuse, glabrous, below gray white, margin entire. Panicle terminal or axillary; flowers white or light red, less aroma; calyx bell shaped, dense yellow brown pubescence, lobes short, several round; corolla butterfly shaped, petals clawed; stamens 10, separated; ovary superior, glabrous, 5-6 ovules, style 1, purple, curved, stigma oblique. Pods woody, flat, round or elliptic, 4-6.5 cm long, 2.5-4 cm wide, apex beaked. Seeds 1-2, bright red, nearly round, 1.3-2 cm long, hilum about 9 mm long. The flowering period is from April to May. The fruiting period is October.
Born by river or forest. It is distributed in Shaanxi, Jiangsu, Hubei, Guangxi and Sichuan.
