(1) antitussive and expectorant effects
In mice, root decoction had obvious antitussive effect (ammonia spray), but the expectorant effect was not significant (Fen Hongfa).
② Effects on smooth muscle
The isolated guinea pig bronchus lung perfusion test showed that the root decoction had no relaxant effect, but had obvious anti acetylcholine effect on isolated rabbit ileum. The extract No.1 (alkaloid) also had significant anti acetylcholine effect, while the extract No.3 (flavonoid glycoside) and No.4 (lactone substance) had weak anti acetylcholine effect.
③ Antibacterial action
In vitro, the root had strong bacteriostatic effect on Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus albicans, catarrhalis, Escherichia coli, but weak effect on pneumococcus, Streptococcus A and B, and influenza bacillus. The total alkaloids and root decoction had obvious inhibitory effect on influenza A virus, rhinovirus 17 and adenovirus 7 (primary monolayer cell culture of human embryonic kidney).
