Short perennial herbs. The root and rhizome are erect and thick, with a transverse diameter of about 2 cm and wrinkles on the surface. No stem. The leaves are simple, basal, 4, radiate, opposite each other, spreading; rhomboid, round or reniform, thick, 6-12 cm in diameter, margin crenate, net veins sunken below, densely tomentose; petiole wide. The cymes are capitate or short spicate, 3.5-7 cm long; bracts filiform, apex needle shaped; calyx purplish green, funnel-shaped, about 8 mm long, sparsely hirsute, with short cleft teeth, teeth spiny; corolla small, reddish purple, lip shaped, upper lip galea short hairy; stamens 4; style inserted at ovary base, apex 2-lobed. Nutlets ovoid. The flowering period is from May to July.
