[plant morphology] clove

Evergreen trees, up to 10 m high. Leaves opposite; petiole distinct; leaf blade oblong ovate or oblong obovate, 5-10 cm long, 2.5-5 cm wide, apex acuminate or acute, base narrow, often extending into petiole, entire. Flowers fragrant, terminal cymose panicle, flower diameter about 6 mm; calyx thick, green to purple, long tubular, apex 4-lobed, lobes triangular; corolla white, slightly purplish, short tubular, 4-lobed; stamens numerous, anthers longitudinal; ovary inferior, connate with calyx tube, style thick, stigma inconspicuous. Berry reddish brown, oblong elliptic, 1-1.6 cm long, 6-8 mm in diameter, apex persistent sepals. Seeds oblong.

It is distributed in Malay islands and Africa, and cultivated in Guangdong and Guangxi of China.

The essential oil (Eugenol) distilled from the root (Eugenol), bark (clove bark), branch (Eugenol), fruit (mother clove) and flower bud of this plant is also used for medicine. See the special section for details.

The dried flower buds are slightly rod-shaped, 1.5-2 cm long, reddish brown to dark brown. The lower part of the calyx tube is cylindrical and slightly flat, 1-1.3 cm long, 5 mm wide and 3 mm thick. The base is gradually narrowed and the surface is rough with oil oozing. There are 4 triangular thick calyx at the upper end of the calyx tube. Upper part subglobose; ca. 6 mm in diam., with 4 petals, embracing each other. When the bud is cut open, the majority of stamens can be seen. The filament is bent toward the center, and there is a strong upright style in the center. Solid and heavy, sink into the water; section is oily, with nails of visible oily exudation. It has strong fragrance and pungent taste. It is better to be big, strong, fresh purple brown, strong aroma and rich oil.

Mainly produced in Tanzania, Malaysia, Indonesia and other places. There are a few of them produced in Guangdong, China.
