Herbs annual, stem erect, much branched. Leaves simple, alternate; ovate or oblong, 5-7 cm long, entire, apex pointed, base tapering; petiolate. Flowers 1-3, axillary; calyx campanulate, apex 5 teeth; corolla 5-lobed, green white, tweezers arranged; stamen 5, inserted at the base of corolla, anther longitudinally split; pistil 1, ovary 2-locular, style slender, stigma slightly capitate. Berries conic or oblong cylindrical, 2.5-5 cm long, equal to or slightly shorter than stipe, usually erect, calyx persistent. Seeds numerous, oblate. The flowering period is from June to July. The fruit period is from July to October.

It is widely cultivated in southern China.
