[plant morphology] Zanthoxylum bungeanum

Evergreen subcreeping shrub, 1-3.5 m high. The root bark is yellow, rough and the cross section is herringbone. The stem has brown prickles. Pinnate compound leaves alternate, 25-30 cm long; leaflets 5-9, subopposite, usually leathery, oblong, oblong lanceolate or ovate oblong, 8-15 cm long and 2.5-5 cm wide, apex acuminate, Keelung broadly cuneate, entire, smooth on both sides; short petioles; branchlets, rachis, petioles, and sometimes small downward curved sharp spines on the middle rib below the leaf. Cymose panicle axillary, shorter leaves; bracts small, ovoid; flowers unisexual; male inflorescence slender, male sepals 4, ovoid, petals 4, yellow, stamen filaments longer than petals; female flowers similar to male flowers, no staminode, carpel 4. Follicles oblate, densely clustered, light brown, rugose, slightly mussel like. Seeds globose, black, shiny. The flowering period is from April to May. The fruit period is from June to August.
