Perennial herbs, up to 1 m high. Young branches covered with yellowish pubescence. Pinnate compound leaves, alternate; 2 leaflets, varying greatly in size and shape, ovate to rhombic, 2.5-11 cm long and 1-5 cm wide, apex obtuse and acuminate, base cuneate, margin rough; petiole short; tendrils underdeveloped and needlelike; stipules narrowly rhombic, margin with sparse coarse teeth. Raceme axillary; calyx obliquely campanulate, calyx teeth 5. Corolla purple or purplish red, flagellum violate, apex emarginate, ca. 15 mm long, pterygoid apex obtuse, lower part auricle and claw, ca. 13 mm long, keel curved ovate, auricle and claw, as long as pterygoid; ovary stipitate, style hairy. Pods narrow rectangular, both sides flat, glabrous, 2.5-4 cm long; seeds oblate, brown. The flowering period is from June to August. The fruiting period is September.
It grows in grassland, gully, forest edge or sunny shrub. It is distributed in most areas of China.
