Deciduous shrubs or small trees, about 3 m high. Young branches densely covered with brownish yellow hairs. Leaves alternate, peltate; leaves ovate, 12-17 cm long, 8-13 cm wide, apex acuminate, base rounded, margin with tiny teeth, sometimes irregularly wavy, papery, green above, pubescent when young, glabrous below, brown pilose below; petioles 6-12 cm long, densely hairy. Flowers unisexual, dioecious, raceme axillary or terminal, peduncle hairy; male flowers clustered, sepals 3-5-lobed, no petals, stamens many; female flowers solitary in bract axils, sepals 3-5-lobed, pistil 1, ovary round. Capsule globose, base with bracts 3, peduncle 5-8 mm long, all parts covered with stellate hairs. The flowering period is June. The fruit period is from July to September.
It grows in sparse forest or shrub of mountain and slope land. Distributed in Hubei, Sichuan, Guizhou, Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan and other places.
