[plant morphology] Sabina vulgaris
Evergreen creeping shrubs, rare trees. The branches are fine, the twigs smell when kneaded, and the skin of old branches is dark brown and smooth. The leaves are alternate and opposite; the scaly leaves cover each other tightly, 1-2.5 mm long, with blunt or slightly pointed apex, entire margin, and elliptic glands in the middle below; the spiny leaves are often found on young plants, and sometimes there are a few spiny leaves in strong plants, which are closely arranged, obliquely extended upward and not developed, 3-7 mm long, concave above, with obvious middle ribs and covered with white powder. It is dioecious, with 2 female globose scales. The cones are berry shaped, kidney shaped, and grow on the top of long and curved twigs. They are irregular obovate, spherical, nearly round or ovoid, with round, flat or forked top, 5-9 mm long, with white powder, dark brown purple or purple black when ripe, with 1-5 (more than 2-3) seeds inside. The seeds are nearly ovoid, slightly flat, ridged, with a small amount of resin groove.
It grows in sandy, stony arid barren mountains and under forests. Distributed in Xinjiang, Qinghai, Gansu, Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi and other places.
[collection] harvest in spring and summer and dry in the sun.
[chemical constituents and pharmacological effects] Sabina vulgaris contains 0.2% sabineol and podophyllotoxin, which can cause hemorrhage and necrosis of sarcoma in mice. The volatile oil can be used as a local irritant, which can cause severe inflammation when applied to skin and mucous membrane for a long time. Excessive volatile oil can cause severe gastrointestinal inflammation, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain and even death. It has been used for abortion, but it is the result of systemic poisoning, not specific to the uterus. If the dog is given sabineol or the extract of this genus for 3 weeks, it will not cause steatosis of liver. If the dose is too large, it will die within 2 days (severe inflammation of small intestine). Sabineol did not affect the uterine tension of guinea pigs, but could cancel its spontaneous activity; on the isolated rabbit small intestine, it could immediately stop its activity, which was reversible and not affected by pilocarpine. Sabineol can increase the muscle tension of leech, but the extract can decrease it, so the two effects are not identical.
