Qingxu, known as gengyang in ancient times, was built in the spring and Autumn period. It was set up in Qingyuan County in the 16th year of kaihuang of Sui Dynasty (596 AD). Jin Dading 29 years (AD 1189) in the east of the county home Xugou county.

In July 1952, Qingyuan County and Xugou county were merged and named Qingxu County with the first name of the two counties. The county seat is in Qingyuan town.

The county governs 4 towns, 9 townships, 193 administrative villages and 211 natural villages, with a permanent population of 113769 (in 2017), and a population density of 460 people per square kilometer.

Qingxu is a suburban county of Taiyuan, which is located in the northwest of Jinzhong Basin and the south end of Taiyuan. It is a part of Pingchuan in Jinzhong.
