Tongchuan town "takes Fushui on the left and Zhongjiang River on the right, and lives in Chongyao between water and land" (Yuanhe county annals), which was the county seat of Zhoufu road.

In 432, Guanghan county was divided into Xincheng County and beiwucheng county. Tongchuan town is now governed by these counties.
In the Sui and Tang Dynasties, it was Zizhou, and in the Song Dynasty, it was Tongchuan Fu Lu.
In Yuan and Ming Dynasties, Tongchuan road and Tongchuan prefecture were the administrative centers.

In June 1981, during the general survey of place names, Chengguan town was changed to Tongchuan town because of its duplicate names; the suburban area was renamed Qinquan District, which governs Beiba, Guanghua, Changping, Dongshan, Gaoshan, Baiqing, Hejia, Muyu and other townships.
In September 1992, the district was withdrawn and the township was built into a town. The former QinQuan district was abolished and merged into Tongchuan Town, with each township as the office.
In 1995, Dongta town was set up in Tongchuan town and Gaoshan Town, and Baiqing town was set up in Baiqing town.
In October 1997, Beiba was designated as Beiba town.
