The famous Luzhou Laojiao Tequ began in the Wanli period of Ming Dynasty and has a history of more than 400 years. According to records, in the late Ming Dynasty and early Qing Dynasty, Luzhou, surnamed Shu, served as a military officer in Lueyang, Shaanxi Province. He was very appreciative of the local Qu liquor and had explored the brewing techniques and equipment in many ways. In the 14th year of Shunzhi (1657 A.D.), when he returned home, he packed the local materials such as Wannian distiller's mother, Qu medicine and mud samples in bamboo baskets, hired local technicians, and went back to Luzhou together. In the south of the city, he chose a place where mud was suitable for wine cellar. The nearby "Longquan well" had clear and sweet water, which complemented the pit mud. So he opened a winery to trial produce Qu liquor. This is the first liquor making workshop in Luzhou, shujuyuan, and the predecessor of Luzhou Qu distillery. By the 22nd year of Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty (1757 AD), Qujiu had become famous.
By the sixth year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty (1880 AD), the annual production of Luzhou Daqu liquor had reached about 10 tons, and its reputation spread throughout the country. In 1915, Luzhou Daqu liquor participated in Panama International Exposition and won the first-class gold medal and certificate of international famous liquor, thus gaining international reputation.
