People's stage

Shanghai People's grand stage is the most famous Centennial theater in China, the earliest existing theater in modern sense in Shanghai, and the birthplace of Shanghai style Peking Opera. Historical evolution

The people's grand stage is the earliest Peking opera performance venue in Shanghai. In 1906 (the 32nd year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty), Tong Ziqing, who was then the chief inspector of the patrol house of the British concession in Shanghai, rented a new type of theater from Hutong foreign company in the name of Xiexing company. Wu Zhanqing, a second-hand merchant, and the commercial press also had shares. It was completed and opened on December 30, 1909 (November 18, the first year of Xuantong). It is called the grand stage of civilization, which is often called the grand stage.

In 1933, the demolition and construction of the grand stage was closed, and the team broke up. After reconstruction, the main entrance was changed to Second Avenue (now 663 Jiujiang Road). Famous American architects were invited to imitate the latest stage construction in New York. The number of audience seats is known as 30000, which is 2632. On September 9, 1934, Mei Lanfang and Ma Lianliang were invited to perform here. On January 26, 1951, the grand stage was purchased and taken over by the Opera Department of Shanghai Municipal Administration of cultural undertakings, and it was changed into a state-owned people's grand stage at the end of February. In 1966, it was renamed the people's Grand Theater, which also showed movies. The original name of the people's stage was restored after the renovation in 1976. In early 1989, "the 90th anniversary performance of Zhou Xinfang's birth" was held here.

After the reconstruction of Shanghai Chengya Real Estate Development Co., Ltd., on September 16, 2010, the people's stage began to be rebuilt and put into trial operation.
