Xumen is located in the south of Wannian bridge in the west of Suzhou city. Xumen is an east-west gate. It is one of the ancient gates opened by the state of Wu in the spring and Autumn period when the capital city was built. It is named after the remote pair of Guxu mountain (Gusu mountain). Xumen, also known as laoxumen, was listed as a cultural relic protection unit of Suzhou City in 1982. The existing gate was rebuilt in 1351, the 11th year of the reign of emperor Zhizheng of the Yuan Dynasty. Both xumen and Panmen, rebuilt in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, are the surviving gates of Suzhou.
