Zhaoren temple was founded in the reign of Zhenguan of Tang Dynasty (627-649 AD). It was built after Li Shimin became emperor to commemorate the soldiers who died in the war in qianshuiyuan (near today's Changwu) and to commend the warriors who died in battle. The only example of wooden architecture in ancient China is the brick and wood structure with eight trigrams hanging on the top (nine beams and eighteen stretchers are folded and arched, commonly known as "one shoulder and eight corners") in the main hall of Zhaoren temple. The existing stele of Zhaoren temple in Chenzhou is a treasure of ancient Chinese calligraphy. It is said that it was written by Yu Shinan. It records the process of the war in shallow water and the scale of the temple. The calligraphy is beautiful and powerful.
Zhaoren Temple
Zhaoren temple is located in the East Street of Changwu County, Xianyang City, Shaanxi Province. Founded in the reign of Zhenguan of Tang Dynasty (627-649), it was built by Li Shimin to commemorate the soldiers who died in the battle with Xue rengao, a separatist force in the west of Gansu Province, in the war of qianshuiyuan (now near Changwu). Zhaoren was meant to commend the warriors for killing themselves.
The main hall, with three rooms in width and 15 meters in depth, is of brick and wood structure. There is no column and beam in the hall. It adopts the eight trigrams hanging top type, with nine beams and eighteen stretchers arching. It is commonly known as "one shoulder carrying eight horns" in folk. It is the only example of ancient wooden buildings in China.
There is a "stele of Zhaoren temple in Chenzhou" in the temple. Zhu Zishe, a famous calligrapher in Tang Dynasty, wrote an essay. The inscription is more than 3500 words. It records the process of the war in shallow water and the scale of the temple. The calligraphy is beautiful and powerful. It is a treasure of ancient Chinese calligraphy. In 1988, the State Council announced it as the third batch of national key cultural relics protection units.
In February 2020, in order to pay tribute to the medical workers struggling in the front line of anti epidemic, from the date of resumption of operation to December 31, 2020, the policy of free visit to all medical workers in the country will be implemented.
Cultural relics protection
The main hall of Zhaoren temple is a national key cultural relic protection unit. Zhaoren temple sits in the north to the South and is built by small quadrangles, covering an area of 4869 square meters. Currently, there are three gates, three stele pavilions, three main halls, three East and three West pavilions. The title of the gate in the temple is "Zhaoren Temple". The main existing building in the temple is a three room hall with nine beams and eighteen pillars. There are no columns inside, and all the buildings are piled up by the surrounding beams, which is the popular way of hanging the top of the eight trigrams. The structure is quite special, which is rare in ancient buildings in China. There is a Tang Dynasty stele in the temple, which is called "Youzhou Zhaoren Temple stele". Zhu Zishe wrote an article, which is said to be Yu Shinan's brush. The calligraphy is beautiful and vigorous, and the whole stele has more than 3000 words, which is basically intact. In 1984, Changwu County Museum was established in Zhaoren temple as a local historical exhibition. There are three exhibition rooms, with an area of more than 300 square meters, and more than 2600 cultural relics in the collection, which are divided into three parts: historical exhibition, stone carving art and architectural art.
