brief introduction
In the center of the cross street at the west gate of Yinchuan city stands the monument of national unity.
It used to be the West Gate Tower of Yinchuan. It is a civil structure, old and gloomy.
With the rise of the surrounding buildings, the dilapidated city buildings were finally demolished in the 1970s, which became the memories of the prosperous streets.
The monument of national unity was built on the foundation of Ximen tower in 1984.
The body of the stele is about 20 meters high. It is a reinforced concrete structure with a unique shape. The main body is composed of two parallel square cement columns of light red and light green, with the top connected and semicircular. The two columns are hollow, just like a long and narrow arch.
On the inner wall of the two columns at the top of the arch, there are two female statues, which symbolize the Hui and Han nationalities. The two statues hold a five color ball together with one hand, which symbolizes the five treasures of Ningxia.
On the semicircular top of the monument stands a Phoenix made of stainless steel. It is about 3 meters high and faces east. It is a vivid symbol of Yinchuan.
origin
It is said that a phoenix flew from the south to the north and saw a rich oasis. The Phoenix thought that this was the south of the Yangtze River, so it landed here and built a nest for its home. From then on, Yinchuan had a beautiful name "Phoenix City".
Yinchuan municipal government, especially at the entrance of the west gate of the city, built a phoenix monument to commemorate the Phoenix, which became the symbol of Yinchuan.
The North-South Street on both sides of Fenghuang monument is called "Fenghuang Street".
legend
There is a beautiful folklore about the origin of Yinchuan city. It says that in ancient times, there was a phoenix symbolizing happiness and auspiciousness, flying from the south of the Yangtze River to the north of the Great Wall.
It puts green clothes on the cloud shrouded Liupan Mountain, turns the white haired Helan Mountain into a green mountain, and turns ningxiachuan into a fertile land with cattle and sheep everywhere.
In order to resist foreign invaders and protect the people here, Fenghuang turned itself into a city, which is Yinchuan city.
It is said that the drum tower in the old city is the head of the Phoenix, the West Tower (Chengtian temple tower) and the North Tower (Haibao tower) are its strong legs, and the yinjiaqu between the old city and the new city is its blood, watering the fertile fields in the countryside.
Therefore, Yinchuan is also known as Phoenix City.
The designer of the national unity monument adopts the meaning of this folk legend to build a phoenix on the top of the monument as the symbol of Phoenix City, which is like the unity and love of the Hui and Han people in Yinchuan and their happy life.
The monument of national unity stands quietly under the blue sky, giving people a sense of peace, tranquility and beauty.
