Hong Kong University of science and technology
The Hong Kong University of science and technology Hong Kong University of science and Technology (HKUST) is an important member of the Pacific Rim University Alliance, East Asian Research University Association, Asian University Alliance, China University Presidents Association, Beijing Hong Kong University Alliance, Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao University Alliance, and has been certified by AACSB and EQUIS. It is a top Asian and internationally renowned research university. The school focuses on technology and business management, humanities and Social Sciences, especially business and engineering.
The Hong Kong University of science and technology is the third university in Hong Kong founded by the Hong Kong government to meet the needs of the economic restructuring in the 1980s. In September 1986, the Preparatory Committee of the Hong Kong University of science and technology was established. In October 1991, HKUST held its opening ceremony. In January 2007, the Fok Ying Tung Research Institute of the Hong Kong University of science and technology was established. In September 2019, the Hong Kong University of science and Technology (Guangzhou) was approved to be established.
Over the past 20 years, HKUST has created internationally leading teaching and research achievements, such as the world's thinnest single-walled carbon nanotubes, the world's highest pixel photos, the world's first intelligent bactericidal coating, the world's No.1 EMBA course, and cultivated outstanding talents in various fields, such as Wang Tao, founder of Xinjiang innovation, Li Huiqiong, chairman of DAB, and Luo shuohan, chief financial officer of Tencent group.
As of September 2019, the university has set up four colleges and interdisciplinary curriculum offices, including the school of science, the school of technology, the school of business administration and the school of Humanities and social sciences. The campus covers an area of more than 60 hectares (150 acres), with 697 teachers and 16054 students, including 10148 undergraduates and 5906 postgraduates.
Historical evolution
The Hong Kong University of science and Technology (HKUST) emerged from the transformation of economic structure in the 1980s. As Hong Kong has entered a period of economic transformation, the Hong Kong government expected that the economy of Hong Kong would be transformed into a high-tech and business oriented economy, and industry and Commerce required more college students to cooperate. Therefore, at that time, the Hong Kong government decided to build a third university to meet this need.
In 1984, the Sino British Joint Declaration was signed, confirming that Britain would transfer sovereignty over Hong Kong to the people's Republic of China in 1997. At that time, British troops were withdrawn in batches, and some military barracks were vacant. In 1986, the Hong Kong government selected the former Kohima camp in Tai Po Tsai, north of the clear water bay peninsula in the new territories, to build the Hong Kong University of science and technology.
In March 1986, the Hong Kong government announced for the first time that a third university would be built in Hong Kong; in September, the Preparatory Committee for the Hong Kong University of science and technology was established.
In June 1987, the Hong Kong Jockey Club donated 1.5 billion Hong Kong dollars to build the campus of HKUST.
In September 1988, Professor Wu Jiawei was appointed president of the University of science and technology. In November, Dr. Chung Shiyuan, chairman of the Council of the Hong Kong University of science and technology, presided over the foundation laying ceremony.
In October 1990, the entrepreneurship center of HKUST opened.
In January 1991, the Academic Affairs Committee of HKUST was formally established; in October, HKUST held an opening ceremony.
In January 1993, a contract of $118.7 million was signed with the Hong Kong government to develop the windshear early warning system for the new Hong Kong International Airport at Chek Lap Kok. In October, the Hong Kong University of science and technology held its first graduation ceremony.
In February 1994, the laser deposition technology of diamond film polymer developed by HKUST won the first patent in the United States.
In January 1995, Bill Gates delivered a speech on "the future of digital revolution" at HKUST.
In January 1996, Professor Wu Jiawei, President of HKUST, initiated the organization of the association of East Asian research universities.
In December 1997, the Kellogg HKUST EMBA course was officially launched.
In April 1999, the school of business administration was recognized by AACSB International Association. In the same month, Dr. Zhong Shiyuan retired as the chairman of the board of trustees and was appointed as the first vice chancellor of the University. Dr. Luo Kangrui served as the chairman of the board of trustees. In September, the research project "information technology" was selected as the field of excellence by the University Grants Committee, which was the first project funded by the University of science and technology.
In November 2000, HKUST successfully developed the world's finest single-walled carbon nanotubes with a diameter of 0.4 nm (nm).
In April 2001, HKUST held its 10th anniversary opening ceremony at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Mr Tung Chee Hwa, chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, was the officiating guest
In September, the research project "basic research and new drug development in molecular neuroscience research" was selected as the field of excellence by the University Grants Committee, which is the second project funded by the University; in November, Professor Zhu Jingwu became the second president of the University.
In May 2002, Dr Chan was appointed as the third chairman of the Council.
In September 2003, the University's Institute of nanomaterials technology was officially established; in October, Kellogg University of science and technology's EMBA course was ranked ninth in the world by the financial times among the 75 courses in the world.
In July 2005, the Fok Ying Tung fund donated HK $800 million to support the strategic development of HKUST and the mainland expansion plan.
In May 2006, the university library was named Li Zhaoji Library in recognition of his contribution to the University; in June, Professor Stephen Hawking hosted the first lecture for the Institute of higher studies.
In January 2007, the Fok Ying Tung Research Institute and its research center of HKUST held an opening ceremony in Nansha; in March, the Lee Siu Kee Foundation donated HK $400 million to HKUST; in December, the Kellogg HKUST EMBA course ranked first in the financial times for the first time.
In April 2008, Dr. Zhang Jiandong was appointed as the fourth chairman of the board of trustees. In December, the foundation stone laying ceremony was held at the Shenzhen industry university research building of HKUST.
In March 2009, Professor Chen Fanchang became the third president of HKUST; in October, Kellogg HKUST's EMBA course was ranked the first in the world for the second time by the financial times.
In June 2010, the Hong Kong University of science and Technology (HKUST) Fok Ying Tung Research Institute building was built in Nansha; in the same month, HKUST established its first State Key Laboratory of molecular neuroscience; in July, the Chow Tai Fook Cheng Yu Tong Foundation donated 90 million yuan to support HKUST in building a new research and academic building; in September, HKUST held the first Rusal presidents' Forum.
In April 2011, HKUST celebrated its 20th anniversary. Professor Han Qide, then vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, and Mr Donald Tsang, chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, presided over the celebration in person. In recognition of the contribution of the University of science and technology, the Nanjing Zijinshan Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences specially named an asteroid 202784 as "HKUST star"
In May, the Hong Kong University of science and technology was ranked as the first university in Asia by the QS Asian university rankings
In September, an opening ceremony was held at the University of science and Technology Shenzhen industry university research building.
In April 2012, the foundation stone laying ceremony of Zheng Yutong building was held; in July, "neural system disease stem cell research strategy" and "low cost, high efficiency, green LED chip system research" were funded by the research funding bureau to carry out theme research; in October, Kellogg University of science and technology EMBA course was ranked the first in the world by the financial times for the fourth consecutive year.

In July, "Research on new light wave and sound wave functional materials" and "Research on the molecular mechanism of synaptic development, signal transduction and mental diseases" were selected as the areas of excellence by the University Grants Committee; in September, the opening ceremony of Li Zhaoji campus was held; in the same month, the State Key Laboratory of advanced display and optoelectronic technology was established; in October, Kellogg- For the fifth year in a row, HKUST's EMBA course was ranked the first in the world by the financial times. In November, the Jockey Club Institute of higher studies of the Hong Kong University of science and technology held a naming ceremony and the inaugural ceremony of the title professorship.
In October 2014, the new visitor information center of Mr. and Mrs. Ho Tingxi held an opening ceremony; in December, the new building of Fok Ying Tung Research Institute of Hong Kong University of science and technology held an opening ceremony; in the same month, the employability of graduates of HKUST ranked 16 in the world, ranking first among universities in Greater China.
In January 2015, the UGC's "2014 research review" evaluation showed that the research achievements of HKUST reached the "world leading level"; in March, Mr Liao Changcheng was appointed as the fifth chairman of the board of trustees; in July, the "undergraduate research program" of HKUST entered its 10th anniversary; in September, the groundbreaking ceremony was held for the first phase of the water sports center; in November, the graduates of HKUST were transferred to the global university employability center According to the survey, it ranked No. 14, ranking No. 1 in Greater China.
In February 2016, the opening ceremony of Zheng Yutong building was held; in March, the University of science and technology inaugurated the third session of the title professorship
