brief introduction
Houbu ancient village in Xishan gets its name from a boat port behind it. There is a well in houbu, which is unique in Suzhou. This song dynasty double well has a history of more than 800 years. However, the water quality is still very clear, and it was used to lift water with a pulley.
Houbu well Pavilion
Houbu Shuangjing was dug in the Southern Song Dynasty Chunxi (1174-1189)
It was opened by the Xu clan of Li people. The Xu clan was a famous family from the north. It used the windlass which was not originally used in the south to draw water. It was one of the important physical evidences that the main clans in Xishan came from the north. During the period of Dade (1297-1307) in the early Yuan Dynasty, Li people Jiang Tengfang built a well Pavilion on Shuangjing, which was rebuilt in 1459, 1870 and 1931 respectively. Now the well and pavilion are well preserved, and the well spring is still the main public well in the village. The double well fence and its base are chiseled by a whole piece of bluestone. The base is 2.22 meters long and 1.20 meters wide. The right well rail is 25cm high, and there are four early rope abrasion marks with width of 2.5cm to 3cm and depth of 2 to 2.5cm in the circle. The left well rail is 32cm high, and there are also three abrasion marks. These abrasion marks are all in the same direction, which shows that they are the result of long-term abrasion of the pulley rope. The well rail is smooth and abnormal, with different heights. The four hexagonal pavilion columns are also made of bluestone, 2.8 meters high. There are cracks on the top of the three columns. They are all relics of the early Yuan Dynasty. The top of the pavilion is made of brick and wood. The well Pavilion is square in four corners, with stable and simple structure and simple and generous style. In 1997, Jingting was listed as a county cultural relic protection unit and renovated.
