geographical position
This building group is bounded by Zhengji Zhonghua, with 20 on the left living in Tan Jiasong's house and 23 on the right living in Chen Geng's house. Chen's house was originally 20 rooms, but later it was added with three rooms, which were equipped with beds, bedding and clothing for the elderly, the disabled, the orphans and some homeless beggars. Behind the house on the right is the Chen family's vegetable garden. The hillside above the vegetable garden is reclaimed by the Chen family as an orchard. On one side of the orchard, there is a martial arts training ground, where the Chen family has practiced martial arts for generations. Chen Geng's ancestors were all engaged in farming and had a hard life. Chen Geng's grandfather, Chen Yihuai, joined Zeng Guofan's Hunan army. He started as a soldier and fought many battles. He became a general, and then he was demobilized.
History of former residence
Chen Geng's father, Chen Shaochun, bought more than 300 mu of farmland with the savings of his forefathers. With his own hard work and frugality, his family gradually prospered. During the Anti Japanese War, many victims came here in droves, hungry and crying. The Chen family then sold the land to help. In the end, there was only 1.3 mu of land left in the family, and the Chen family's house was given to the poor people for free. Chen Geng was born in such a family on February 27, 1903. He worked, practiced martial arts and studied with his family since childhood. After joining the Hunan army in 1916, he left his hometown. On March 15, 1960, Chen Geng returned to Yangji Bay, where he had been away for many years. Today, only three of Chen Geng's ancestral houses are left. The rest have been demolished by local residents and small western style houses have been built.
