The Donghe bridge, located on the talevychuk River in the east of Baicheng County, has witnessed the changes on both sides of the river for more than 100 years. Standing at the head of the bridge, looking out from the fence, the river is clear, the setting sun is shining, the waterfowls are flying, and a red sun is falling slowly from the buildings, which puts a golden veil on the county.
Standing on the new East River Bridge, Ren Keliang, deputy director of Baicheng County Cultural Center, told us: "the East River Bridge is now composed of two bridges, one is called the old East River Bridge, the other is called the new East River Bridge. The old East River Bridge is 100 meters above. "
Yellow and green taxis passed us. The bridge deck of Xindong River Bridge is extremely flat. The novel and unique street lights on both sides connect perfectly with the wide streets on both sides of the river. The modern atmosphere is at a glance. Not far away, the tall round arch of laodonghe bridge seemed to wave to us, making us palpitating. We went down the bridge and headed for the old Donghe bridge to the north.
The origin of the name
What we see is a semi-circular double arch bridge with beautiful shape. What's more unique is that the whole bridge is divided into two parts. There are more than two meters between the two bridges. Walking on the bridge, you can see the river flowing in the middle. It is worth noting that there is not a car on the 7-meter-wide bridge deck. From time to time, there are only Uygur herdsmen riding on high horses and riding in newly decorated carriages and donkeys.
Why doesn't a car cross the bridge?
Ren Keliang said that the bridge was built in 1979. In 1991, a big flood that never happened in 50 years caused its piers to sink, which was a potential safety hazard. From May 1992 to June 1993, a new East River Bridge was built in the lower reaches.
The bridge on the river is called Donghe bridge, but it began more than 100 years ago in the fourth year of Guangxu reign of Qing Dynasty (1878 AD). At that time, there were four wooden bridges on the river that could pass carriages. Because the bridge was located to the east of the county, people used to call it Donghe bridge.
Laodong River Bridge
Yibulayn skam, who is over 90 years old and grew up by the river, and still lives near the Donghe bridge, said that at that time, the bridge was very narrow. It was built with round logs and fixed with iron nails. The peddlers who come from afar often cross the bridge. They drive camels or four wheeled wooden wheeled carriages. They are very imposing and imposing. Sometimes, they stop at the end of the bridge for a few days and sell things from Urumqi or Kuqa to the villagers nearby. The scene is very lively.
"Because the wooden bridge is not strong, it is often built in the first year and washed away by the flood the next year." Ibrahim skam said: I remember one year, there was a huge flood on the talevychuk River, which destroyed all four wooden bridges and disrupted traffic. For more than half a year, we had to cut down trees and make rafts to cross the river. Many people were drowned because of crossing the river. In 1942, when the Kuomintang government built Dihua (now Urumqi) - Kashi highway, it built an 8-hole, 42 meter long wooden bridge, which solved the problem of people crossing the river. "Since then, we have only seen Ma Xilang." Ibrahim scam recalled.
However, only five years later, the bridge was destroyed again. In 1948, the Highway Engineering Administration Bureau of the Sixth District of the General Administration of highways of the Ministry of communications sent a bridge engineering team to rebuild a simple timber bridge with a width of 4.5 meters and a length of 41 meters on the original site. The bridge deck could only pass light vehicles.
After the liberation of Xinjiang, the bridge was repaired intermittently and lasted until 1979. The party and the government invested 180000 yuan to build a 3-hole (16 meters per hole) open spandrel hyperbolic arch permanent bridge with a total length of 60.7 meters. The bridge deck is 7 meters wide, with 0.75 meters of sidewalks on both sides, which can carry heavy trucks. It not only facilitates the masses, but also plays an important role in the economic development of Baicheng county.
Xindong River Bridge
In June 1993, the Xindong River Bridge with a total investment of 2.38 million yuan was completed. The bridge is 117.92 meters long and 9.5 meters wide, completely ending the history of Donghe bridge "sticking neck" on 307 provincial road, and becoming a bridge connecting Kangzhuang Avenue in Baicheng county.
Zhao Jiangping, Vice Minister of Publicity Department of Baicheng county Party committee, said that Baicheng county has a long history, beautiful mountains and rivers, fertile land, rich products and numerous mineral deposits, and is an autonomous region level commodity grain base, oil base and animal product base. As early as 6000-7000 B.C., human beings lived there. During the Qin and Han Dynasties, it has developed into "Chengguo states" and is known as one of the birthplaces of Qiuci culture. It originated and spread the Buddhist culture of Kizil Grottoes at home and abroad, and the Han and Tang culture inherited from General Liu Pingguo's adherence to the border, which has a wide influence at home and abroad. Good bridge and road conditions have brought convenient transportation and promoted the prosperity of six pillar industries of Baicheng County, including coal, electric power, oil and gas chemical industry, agricultural and livestock products, mining development and tourism. The total GDP of Baicheng county has more than doubled from 568 million yuan at the end of the Ninth Five year plan, reaching 1.288 billion yuan, with an average annual increase of 16.78%. Today, direct buses to Urumqi, Turpan, Korla, Kashgar, Aksu and other places are open, and the driving time is much shorter than in the past.
Shawuti, a farmer in Baicheng County, was deeply touched by the benefits of bridge changes in the whole county. He said: "in the past, the bridge was washed off as soon as there was a flood. Our fruits, melons and vegetables were often rotten in the ground. Now, the bridges are all made of reinforced concrete. They are very strong, so we don't have to worry any more."
