During the Opium War, British ships invaded Wusongkou. At the age of 67, Jiangnan Governor Chen Huacheng led his troops to fight back. He wounded many British ships in wusongxi fort and fought hand to hand with the British army to defeat the British attack. Later, because his superior, Niu Jian, the governor of Liangjiang, did not fight, renbaoshan fled, the British army landed, copied the Western Fort from the back road, Chen Huacheng stuck to the display site, suffered seven injuries and died for his country.
The exhibition content of the memorial hall is divided into three parts: "young people join the army, experience war success", "accept orders in the face of danger, blood spills over Baoshan", "national hero, history of fame". It shows the relics and historical materials of Wusong fort during the Opium War: Chen Huacheng personally supervised the construction of the iron cannon of "pacifying the enemy general", the high-level armour of the first grade military officer of the Qing Dynasty, the simulated scene of the fierce battle of Wusong, and the gold plaque of "the loyal minister of the governor" inscribed by Emperor Daoguang after Chen Huacheng died. On November 30, 1996, the Shanghai Municipal People's government named the memorial as "Shanghai youth education base".
Chen Huacheng
Chen Huacheng (1776-1842) was born in Tongan, Fujian Province. He was born in the army and served as commander in chief and commander in chief. In 1840, he was transferred from Fujian to Jiangnan. After the outbreak of the Opium War, he set up strict defenses at Wusongkou. On June 16, 1842, the British fleet attacked Wusongkou. Chen Huacheng seized the Western Fort and fired back, sinking and injuring four enemy ships. Because the garrison of East Fort and Baoshan City failed to fight, the British army landed in many places, causing Chen Huacheng's troops to suffer from the enemy. In the battle, Chen Huacheng was shot and died bravely. The memorial hall displays Chen Huacheng's life story, documents, pictures and scene models of the Wusong war, as well as two iron cannons unearthed from the ruins of the West Fort and the northwest of the moat of the former Shanghai City, with the words of Chen Huacheng's supervision on the body of the cannons. The memorial hall was opened to the public on June 16, 1992, the 150th anniversary of Chen Huacheng's death.
