Sanhe Island
Sanhe Island, also known as battery Island, is located in Binhai New Area of Tianjin. It is the only island listed in China island chronicle in Tianjin sea area. Its base site is connected with the land. It was cut off in 1973 when the Ji canal was widened to form an island.
Forming history
It is named after the confluence of Chaobai River, Yongding New River and Ji canal. Sanhe island is adjacent to the Bohai Sea in the East, with an area of 1.59 hectares, a perimeter of 563 meters, a slope of 0 to 10 degrees, an area of 15000 square meters (400 × 200), a coastline of 562.5 meters, and a maximum of 5.81 meters. Sanhe island was formed in the Ming Dynasty. During the Jiajing period of Ming Dynasty, in order to prevent Japanese invaders from invading, a Beiying fort was built on the left bank of the Jiyun canal. Together with the Nanying fort on the right bank, the Beitang fort was formed. In the Qing Dynasty, the fortress was repaired three times and the foundation was reinforced, which basically formed the shape of peninsula. In the late Qing Dynasty, Beitang fort was second only to Dagu fort. When the Allied forces of eight countries invaded, the whole fort was destroyed, but the foundation was intact. In 1973, when the Ji canal was widened, the connection between the foundation of Beiying fort and the land was cut off, forming today's Sanhe island. Because of its special geographical location, Sanhe island has formed a special landscape. It can not only be used as a good place to watch tide, sea and sunrise, but also become a tourist spot with educational significance because of its extraordinary history.
Beitang Fort (1550-1970)
Sanhe island was formed in Jiajing period of Ming Dynasty. In 1550 (the 29th year of Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty), Qi Jiguang built Dagu fort and dongdaying fort on both sides of the estuary of Ji canal to prevent Japanese pirates. Sanhe island is the original site of Beiying fort. The Qing government rebuilt and reinforced Beitang Fort three times. In the second Opium War, British and French allied forces landed in Beitang and occupied Beitang fort.
In 1900, when the Allied forces of eight countries attacked Dagu, Beitang fort was occupied again. In 1901, the Qing government signed the Treaty of Xin Chou with the Western powers who invaded China. According to the Treaty of xinchou, Dagu, Beitang and other fort were forced to demolish, and Beiying Fort had only three concrete foundations.
In the early 1960s, due to national defense reasons, reinforced concrete blockhouses were built around the Beiying fort.
This stage laid the foundation for the formation of Sanhe island.
Formation of artificial island (1970-1974)
In order to ensure flood discharge in flood season in Tianjin, Chaobai new river was excavated manually in 1950 and Yongding New River was excavated from 1970 to 1971.
In 1973, when the Ji canal was widened, because of construction difficulties, the fort site was preserved to form an artificial island at the confluence of Yongding New River, Chaobai New River and Ji canal.
Island formation (1974-present)
Sanhe island was formed in 1974. Since then, due to the effect of tide and current, the sediment deposited around the island and formed muddy tidal flat. After the "Tianjin coastal zone resources survey" in the early 1980s, Tianjin Toponymic committee officially named it "Sanhe island" in December 1983.
battery
Sanhedao Fort (Beiying fort, also known as Youying Fort), as a part of Beitang fort, played an important role in modern Chinese history. In 1550 (the 29th year of Jiajing reign of Ming Dynasty), Beiying fort and dongdaying Fort became Beitang sea defense fortress guarding Jiyun estuary to prevent Japanese pirates. Because the terrain of Beiying fort was low, it was built after artificial filling and tamping. Since then, Beiying fort has experienced three times of reinforcement and reconstruction in the 20th year of Daoguang (1840), the 8th year of Xianfeng to the 9th year of Xianfeng (1858-1859), and the 4th year of Guangxu to the 5th year of Guangxu (1878-1879). It has filled up the land in the camp, strengthened and rebuilt the defense facilities.
In the second Opium War, because Dagu fort was difficult to capture, the British and French allied forces landed in Beitang on August 1, 1860, where the defense was weak, and carried out the Beitang naval battle. The British and French allied forces occupied Beitang fort, then surrounded Dagu fort from the rear, and Dagu Fort fell. Then the British and French forces marched in and plundered Tianjin and Beijing.
In 1900, when the Allied forces of eight countries attacked Dagu, Beitang fort was occupied again. On September 7, 1901, the Qing government signed the Treaty of Xin Chou with the Western powers who invaded China. Article 8 of the treaty stipulates that "the state of the Qing Dynasty has promised to flatten all the Dagu fort and the fort that obstructs the passage from the capital to the sea, and now it has tried to do so.". Since then, Dagu, Beitang and other fort were forced to demolish, Beiying Fort left only three soil foundation.

Free access
The preliminary design of the pedestrian suspension bridge connecting the South Bank of Yongding New River and Sanhe island has been completed, and the construction is expected to start, and it will be initially completed in November 2012. At that time, citizens can board the only island in the city free of charge to watch tide, sea, sunrise, birds, fish and fort on Sanhe island.
The unique geographical location makes Sanhe Island an ecological island, inhabited by a variety of birds, but also a resort to watch the natural scenery and feel the style of the fort. In order to carry out the protective transformation of Sanhe Island, Beitang economic zone makes use of the current landscape resources and adopts greening and planting techniques to build the river channel in the embankment into an island with hydrophilic leisure, smooth and pleasant, and estuarine wetland. After the completion of the pedestrian bridge, visitors only need to walk for 10 minutes to get on the island free of charge and enjoy the natural and cultural beauty.
Sanhe Island pedestrian bridge is located in the south side of Jiyunhe river sluice and connected with Sanhe island. The whole bridge is designed in suspension mode. It is a three span suspension bridge with a main span of 180m. In order to facilitate the passage of pedestrians, the whole bridge deck is designed as a wooden structure. Considering the strong wind, flood season and other climatic conditions, a 15.5m long approach bridge joint is designed at the south bank embankment of the whole pedestrian bridge, and four wind resistant locks are set. The whole bridge body can resist the strong wind of grade 4-5. At the same time, the whole embankment is widened to 16m near the bridge site, which does not affect the flood discharge capacity of the whole river channel. The design of the pedestrian bridge will also introduce military elements, and the two 12 meter high piers will be built into fortress turrets. With its simple and beautiful structure and blue stone bricks, the footbridge echoes the double base Fort camp and Sanhe island at both ends, becoming a new landscape.
The design of the whole pedestrian bridge has been completed and construction is about to start. According to the plan, the whole project is expected to be completed in October 2012. At that time, tourists only need to walk 10 minutes to Sanhe island. They can not only watch the rainbow bridge and dampproof gate, but also overlook the eco city, and enjoy the scene of Ji canal and Yongding New River crossing into the sea. You can also watch birds and crabs in the wetland on the island, and experience the vicissitudes of history at the fort site.
