Historical evolution
Beihai shell carving has a long history. The history of Beihai shell carving can be traced back to Qin and Han Dynasties. From the Beihai Hepu folk handed down the Ming and Qing Dynasty shell carving furniture, crafts and exquisite skills research, shell carving skills mature in the late Ming and early Qing Dynasty. Beihai is known as "old county of South Pearl, famous District of Cape". A large number of pearl shells are left after Pearl carving. Pearl shells are the best raw materials for shell carving. Zhuxiang people wear small shells in a string as ornaments, and take the special shaped spiral shells as ornaments. This use and preliminary processing of the natural form of shells shows the rudiment of Beihai shell carving art. From the ancient Pearl City of Bailong and the shell ornaments unearthed from the Han Tombs in Hepu, we can see that Beihai shell carving has a long history with profound cultural, artistic and technological accumulation. After more than 400 years of continuous exploration, inheritance, development and innovation, Beihai shell carving artists have made Beihai shell carving art enter the treasure house of Chinese traditional culture and become a wonderful flower of Guangxi traditional handicrafts.
The development of Beihai shell carving originated from the Autumn Fair of Guangzhou Export Commodities in October 1963 (commonly known as "Canton Fair"). In the 1970s, with the increase of the export volume and the expansion of the market, a number of shell carving production enterprises, large and small, have been set up all over the country. However, Beihai shell carving, which has accumulated a lot of experience, is the best. At the end of the 1980s, Beihai shell carving was sold to more than 30 countries and regions in Asia, Australia, Europe and the United States, becoming a business card for Beihai and even Guangxi's foreign trade and exchange.
Since the 1990s, with the decrease of export market demand and the increase of raw materials and labor costs, the situation of shell carving industry in the whole country has taken a sharp turn. Beihai has become one of the few enterprises that are still on the edge of life and death. In 2006, with a history of 42 years, the old craft factory, which was once very popular, declared to stop production.
Innovation and development
In 2006, when Beihai shell carving was facing extinction, a private enterprise in Beihai city took over part of the equipment of the former Beihai arts and Crafts General Factory, recalled some technical personnel and workers, and took the initiative to inherit the shell carving skills. In the 21st century, the concept of pursuing green and environmental protection is rising day by day. Nature and original flavor are the future development direction. On the basis of retaining the original technology and production process, shell carving artists have made many technological innovations in shell carving processing technology, striving to meet the aesthetic needs of the new era. The first is to innovate the technology, search for colored shells through various channels, and change the colored shell carving into the primary color shell carving. The second is the strategy of big picture and high-quality products. He has creatively completed the "Golf heritage", "birds homing", "Pearl River back to Hepu" and other large paintings of exquisite shell carvings. Among them, the 19 meter wide exquisite shell carving mural "the heritage of golf" is known as the best in China.
Inheritance and protection
Since the beginning of the new century, with the continuous enhancement of comprehensive national strength, the Chinese government has attached great importance to the protection of intangible cultural heritage. At the beginning of 2003, the Ministry of culture, the Ministry of finance, the State Commission for democracy and people's livelihood and the China Federation of literary and art circles jointly launched and implemented the protection project of Chinese national and folk culture. It is planned that by 2020, a relatively complete intangible cultural protection system will be initially established, and the protection work will be basically scientific, standardized and institutionalized. In March 2005, the general office of the State Council issued "opinions on strengthening the protection of China's intangible cultural heritage", which established the guidelines and principles for the protection of intangible cultural heritage, and put forward guiding opinions on the tasks, objectives, requirements and measures of the protection work. In June 2005, the Central Propaganda Department, the Ministry of culture and other five ministries and commissions jointly issued "opinions on the use of traditional festivals to carry forward the excellent traditions of national culture". In December of the same year, the State Council issued the "notice on strengthening the protection of cultural heritage", deciding that the second Saturday of June every year will be the "Cultural Heritage Day" of China from 2006. The publication of this series of documents shows that the protection of intangible cultural heritage has become an important part of government work. Governments at all levels have begun to increase the support for Beihai shell carving from funds to policies. The Guangxi Second Light Industry Association, together with the Regional Department of culture, the Department of finance, the Tourism Bureau and other relevant units, has given key support to Beihai shell carving industry, and actively promoted Beihai shell carving to participate in various national arts and crafts exhibitions and cultural tourism product promotion activities. At the same time, Beihai shell carving Museum, Beihai vocational and technical school and Guangxi Ethnic secondary vocational school jointly set up Beihai shell carving skill training, strengthened talent training of reserve forces, and established "Beihai shell carving inheritance base".
