The Museum of Chengdu University of technology was founded in the autumn of 1960. At the beginning of its construction, Chengdu Institute of Geosciences (the predecessor of Chengdu University of Technology) set up three geological exhibition rooms for the purpose of teaching practice and collection and preservation of specimens. With the increasing number of geological specimens collected by teachers, students and staff in field geological practice, these geological exhibition rooms were merged and named in 1962 As the exhibition hall of Chengdu Institute of Geosciences, it mainly displays geological specimens such as rocks, minerals, minerals and paleontology. It is not only an important professional practice base of Chengdu Institute of Geosciences, but also receives some scattered social visitors. In 1965, the famous Hechuan Mamen river dragon was transported to our museum after being studied by Professor Yang Zhongjian, the father of dinosaurs, from the Institute of paleovertebra and Paleoanthropology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. In order to display the 22 meter long and 3.5-meter-high dragon and enrich the exhibition contents of the museum, the university decided to expand the area of the exhibition hall, so the comprehensive museum with an area of 800 square meters was established in 1965.
During the ten-year Cultural Revolution, the work of the exhibition hall was basically paralyzed. It was not until the Third Plenary Session of the Eleventh Central Committee of the CPC in 1978 that the work of the exhibition hall began to recover gradually.
In 1980, the University transferred Bian Zhaoxiang, a famous paleontologist in China, to be the curator of the exhibition hall. At the same time, the exhibition hall was upgraded from a former section level unit to a department level unit. In 1986, the exhibition hall was listed as the key reception unit for the 30th anniversary of the founding of Chengdu University of Geosciences. The layout of the exhibition hall was changed into a pattern of combining teaching, scientific research and popular science propaganda. It was officially renamed as the Museum of Chengdu University of Geosciences, and began to try to go out of the school for scientific propaganda.
With the renaming of the University, the museum was renamed the Museum of Chengdu Institute of technology in 1993 and the Museum of Chengdu University of technology in 2001.
After more than 50 years of development, the Museum of Chengdu University of science and technology has gradually developed from a teaching exhibition hall serving only teachers and students of the university into a natural museum with a certain influence at home and abroad, a high reputation in Western China and even the whole country, and a focus on Geoscience collections.
As the image display window and reception unit of the school, the museum has successfully completed the tasks of important leaders, experts and scholars, international friends and so on. In 1992, the museum received Professor Lu Jiaxi, former vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; in 2003, the museum received leaders from Comrade Li Lanqing, former member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and vice premier of the state. According to incomplete statistics, since 1978, the museum has received thousands of leaders at or above the provincial and ministerial level, famous experts and scholars at home and abroad, entrepreneurs and celebrities, highlighting the importance of the museum in the daily reception of schools.
For a long time, the museum has been committed to the teaching and research services for the teachers and students of our university. It undertakes the entrance visit and education tasks of thousands of freshmen every year. At the same time, it also provides teaching sites and teaching resources for geological cognition practice of geological students. In addition, the museum actively undertakes the teaching task of Paleontology and other courses, enrolling and cultivating 8 Postgraduates of paleontology.
The Museum of Chengdu University of technology has also made great achievements in scientific research, especially in the excavation and research of dinosaurs in Dashanpu, Zigong in the late 1980s. Since the 1990s, scientific research has been growing rapidly, and the research results have been continuously transformed into science popularization and dinosaur development, which further promotes the development of science popularization. At the same time, he has also achieved good academic results. He has won the second prize of National Natural Science, the second and third prizes of provincial and ministerial level, and the "Eighth Five Year" outstanding scientific research collective award of the Ministry of Geology and mineral resources (now the Ministry of land and resources). He has published more than 100 papers and more than 10 Monographs in domestic and foreign journals.
While completing the teaching and scientific research work of the University, the museum always takes the popular science education and patriotism education for the youth and the people as its own responsibility, and vigorously serves the popular science education of the public. Except for the Spring Festival, the museum is open to the public all year round and has holidays all the time. It actively holds "4.22 Earth Day", "5.18 Museum Day" and "popular science activity month" inside and outside the University Popular science theme activities such as "science popularization into community", "science popularization into campus" and parent-child activities popularize the knowledge of Earth Science, publicize the spirit of scientific exploration, spread the ideological and cultural values, educate the young people to enhance their awareness of protecting resources, environment and earth, and sublimate their feelings of patriotism, school, nature and science. Since 2005, the museum has received about 700000 visitors, with an average of 60000 visitors per year. Dozens of popular science exhibitions have been held in dozens of large, medium and small cities in China, receiving more than 2 million visitors from home and abroad, which has achieved remarkable social and economic benefits.
So far, the museum has been successively awarded by the Propaganda Department of the CPC Central Committee, the Ministry of education, the Ministry of science and technology, the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League, the all China Youth Federation, the Ministry of land and resources, the Sichuan provincial Party committee and provincial government, the Chengdu municipal Party committee and municipal government, and the Chinese society of Paleontology: the national science popularization education base, the National Youth Science and technology education base, the Chinese Youth Science and technology innovation action education base, the land and resources science popularization base, and the national science popularization education base They are named as paleontology popular science education base, Sichuan popular science education base, Sichuan Youth Science and technology education base, Sichuan patriotism education base, Chengdu popular science education base, Chengdu youth popular science education base, Chengdu patriotism education base, Chenghua Geoscience and culture popular science education base and patriotism education base.
The work carried out by the museum in teaching and scientific research, science popularization and development has not only achieved certain economic benefits for the school, but also improved the popularity and influence of the school at home and abroad, becoming an important propaganda window for the school.
The school attaches great importance to the reconstruction of the museum. In 2004, it put forward the plan of building a new museum. In 2006, according to the plan of Chengdu to build a northeast tourism area, it decided to build a geological nature museum in the third section of Chenghua Avenue, covering an area of 75 Mu, with a building area of 17000 square meters. Geographically, the new museum is connected with Chengdu Giant Panda Research Base, Beihu ecological garden area and Chengdu Zoo, forming a unique popular science tourism area with the theme of natural science education. In September 2007, the museum reconstruction project officially started, and the main project was completed in 2009. There are eight fixed exhibition halls in the new museum: the earth's mystery hall, the origin and evolution Hall of life, the dinosaur hall, the mineral hall, the gemstone hall, the mineral hall, the natural disaster and environmental protection hall, the human and nature hall, as well as two temporary exhibition halls and a Popular Science Lecture Hall. In addition to the museum building, the museum also has 432 million square meters of science popularization square, garden and parking lot.
On October 28, 2016, Chengdu Municipal People's government and Chengdu University of technology signed the strategic cooperation framework agreement on promoting comprehensive innovation and reform and building a world-class university. The agreement clearly states that "Chengdu Municipal People's government and Chengdu University of technology will jointly plan, prepare and build a Chengdu Natural Museum in the campus to make it an important cultural landmark of the city". At present, the project of Chengdu nature museum jointly built by Chengdu University is in full swing. It is believed that in the near future, a "domestic first-class, international leading" Chengdu nature museum will be built on the campus of Chengdu University of technology.
