Mong Kok Stadium
Mong Kok stadium, located at 37 Flower Market Road, Mongkok, Kowloon, Hong Kong, China, mainly holds football matches and holds 6500 people.
The Mong Kok stadium, formerly known as the flower market Municipal Stadium and formerly known as the army stadium, is an outdoor multi-purpose sports venue in Hong Kong. The Mong Kok stadium is now managed by the leisure and Cultural Services Department of the Hong Kong SAR government.
Development history
Mong Kok stadium, formerly known as the army stadium, was handed over to the former Urban Council in 1961. Mong Kok stadium was originally known as the flower market Municipal Stadium. When the Urban Council opened on June 16, 1973, it was called Mong Kok stadium.
Improvement works
In September 1990, the Mong Kok stadium was improved. The track and field track was eliminated and the competition lawn area was expanded. Two temporary aluminum stands were built to accommodate 8500 spectators. During the improvement project, the division a league was moved to Sham Shui Po sports ground, which can only accommodate 1500 people.
reconstruction
As the Mong Kok stadium has been complained by AFC that there is no drug control room, press room and Internet facilities, it is difficult to release the event information. In addition, the Mong Kok stadium is once again full, so the Hong Kong Football Association proposed to the government in 2008 to demolish the original 8500 seats in Mong Kok stadium, including the two rows of temporary stands added in 1991, and rebuild a stand with a capacity of 10000 spectators and upper cover and seats, so as to provide a more comfortable environment for fans to watch the game. Due to the limited environment, the stadium will only have a 6500 seat covered auditorium after reconstruction. However, the auditorium will be covered to protect the audience from the impact of strong sunlight and rain. Besides, there will also be a ball pass, players' lounge, drug testing room, closed circuit television and parking lot. The project is expected to be carried out in phases as soon as 2009 and gradually completed in 2011. The project cost is estimated to be about HK $250 million.
Main activities
Hong Kong Football
Mong Kok stadium is very important for local football. The first sports event held at Mong Kok stadium is the summer Cup football match. The teams participating in the match are young people, Jiuguo, Yuyuan, police, Guanghua and Longmen.
Mong Kok stadium is one of the venues of the Hong Kong Group a football league. Since the opening of the stadium, apart from the construction and grass cultivation period, the Hong Kong Group a football league has been playing continuously.
Due to the sluggish football market in recent years, the number of local football entrants has decreased greatly. Therefore, nearly 90% of the football matches in the whole season are held at the low-cost Mong Kok stadium. In addition, some local football cup matches will be held in Mong Kok.
Hong Kong Football Team
Mong Kok stadium is one of the training grounds for Hong Kong football team. Although the Hong Kong Stadium is the home of the Hong Kong football team, some of the home team matches of the Hong Kong team will be held in Mong Kok stadium or Siu Sai Wan stadium for smaller events or when the opponents are weaker.
Although the old equipment of Mong Kok stadium before reconstruction is not suitable for outside team competition, there are still a few outside team competitions before reconstruction, such as some Asian Football Association Cup competitions.
International events
Mong Kok stadium was used as the venue of the women's football championships of the Asian Cup in 1981, 1986 and 1989, and also as the final venue in 1986 and 1989.
Cultural and other activities
Because the Mong Kok stadium is located in the bustling downtown and has convenient transportation, it is the main venue for other large-scale activities. The annual meeting of the Hong Kong traffic safety team and the Hong Kong Girl Scouts Association was held at Mong Kok stadium.
