Life
Cai Yuanpei (1868-1940), a famous educator, was born in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province. In the Qing Dynasty, Jinshi was awarded the Imperial Academy editor. He was deeply influenced by democratic thought and engaged in anti feudal democratic struggle. He wrote for Su Bao, a revolutionary newspaper edited by Zhang Taiyan and Zou Rong, and advocated overthrowing the feudal monarchy. The Qing government arrested Zhang Taiyan and Zou Rong, and Cai Yuanpei fled to Qingdao under German rule. He went to Germany to study in 1907. In 1912, the government of the Republic of China was established, and Cai Yuanpei was appointed as the director general of education, establishing a modern education system throughout the country. He was president of Peking University in 1917 and advocated inclusive and democratic education. Later, he served as president of Academia Sinica. Shandong University was established in the late Qing Dynasty, and it was a provincial Shandong University in the period of the Republic of China.
Organizing Qingdao University
In 1928, the Nanjing national government took over the power of Shandong and prepared to establish a new Shandong University. Cai Yuanpei suggested that Shandong university should be located in Qingdao, where the terrain and climate are good. The Ministry of education adopted this suggestion and set up the Preparatory Committee of Qingdao University. He Siyuan, Cai Yuanpei, Zhao taimou and Yang Zhensheng were appointed as the preparatory committee members. In early 1930, Cai Yuanpei's family came to Qingdao and lived in Qingdao University (formerly Bismarck barracks). He wrote to Wu Zhihui and actively raised funds for the University. This year, the Chinese Science Society held its annual meeting in Qingdao, which was attended by Cai Yuanpei, Li Shizeng and others. Cai Yuanpei always believed that Qingdao should be the "cultural center" of Shandong and even the north. He and Yang Xingfo proposed that Qingdao should be used as a marine science research base and suggested that the China Institute of Oceanography should be established. This proposal was adopted by the relevant authorities, and soon the Preparatory Committee was set up, which decided to build it in two phases. The first phase starts with an aquarium. In September 1930, Yang Zhensheng was appointed president of national Qingdao University. In the same month, the school officially opened. Cai Yuanpei moved out of the school and lived at 12 Pingyuan road. Under Cai Yuanpei's attention, the Qingdao aquarium was started in January 1931 and completed in February 1932. The opening ceremony was held on May 8. Cai Yuanpei delivered an opening speech. Today, 70 years later, the Qingdao aquarium is still a bright spot on the seashore of Qingdao. The Japanese imperialists launched the September 18th Incident and occupied the three eastern provinces. Chiang Kai Shek adopted the policy of non resistance and arrested and slaughtered Communists and progressives. Cai Yuanpei went to Shanghai to fight for patriotism and democracy with Song Qingling, Yang Xingfo, Lu Xun and other progressive organizations such as the China Civil Rights League. When Cai Yuanpei was still at home in Qingdao, he went to Laoshan to see the famous collection of daozang in Taiqing palace. National Qingdao University was reorganized into national Shandong University in 1932. Cai Yuanpei still paid close attention to the running of the University. He suggested and supported the merging of the liberal arts college and the science college into a liberal arts college. Cai Yuanpei said: "there are several features of the University, which are rare in other universities First, the College of Arts and the College of science will be merged into the College of Arts and Science - because the boundaries between arts and science are too clear. For example, many subjects used to be included in the liberal arts, but now they are all classified as science. If the College of Arts and science is merged, it will naturally enable the students of arts not to neglect the things of science, and the students of science not to neglect the courses of Arts. " Cai Yuanpei suggested: "the agricultural college should study according to the agricultural situation of the province, and then try to improve and develop the agriculture of the province." He made a speech at the fourth anniversary of Shandong University (1934) and gave academic lectures at the University. He is also concerned about the second phase of the Institute of Oceanography. In 1937, he went to the Institute of oceanography to work, and the scientific research building was completed. But then Japan launched a comprehensive war of aggression against China, and Japanese imperialism occupied Qingdao for the second time. Before long, Cai Yuanpei went to Hong Kong and died in 1940.
