The fanpo building was built by Xu Jingquan, an overseas Chinese from the Philippines in Jinjiang, Fujian Province. It was completed in 1927. The color of the building is bright and the shape is unique. Some Rococo features are combined with Chinese traditional crafts harmoniously and skillfully, which is rare in Gulangyu villas. It is still graceful and elegant. It has been selected by film directors for many times. It has made many films here, such as Liao Zhongkai, autumn in spring, Tulou family and so on.

Walk in and look at the rockery wall, the mirror hole, the leaky window and the poetic wall, the small stage, the music pool and the passageway, Then, look at the house, the circular cloister of the house, the flowers on the capitals of the cloister, the sunken fish and wild geese on the lintel of the corridor under the eaves, the golden monkey offering peaches, the classical characters and the auspicious signs All kinds of relief. Then, look at the door frames and window covers made of jade white granite. Then, look at the top of the building and the screen in the middle of the four women's walls. There are flowers, angels and beauties It's really dazzling, lively and gorgeous.

Why is it called "fanpo building"? It turned out that when Xu Jingquan went to the Philippines to do business and become rich, he took his mother to the Philippines to offer filial support and make her live a good life. However, Xu's mother was used to Minnan life, was not used to the soil and water of the Philippines, and lost her Minnan dialect speaking villagers. After living for a few months, she made a fuss about going back to her hometown in Jinjiang. Xu Jingquan was in a dilemma: if he didn't send his mother back, she would quarrel all day long to go home. Sending his mother home was not enough to express his filial piety to his mother. So he went to Gulangyu to buy land and build houses, like other overseas Chinese, to support his mother and fulfill his filial piety.

He first bought an old villa and settled his mother down. Then he built a large villa on the east side of the villa, which was larger than the "tianyilou" in Xiamen, and built an annex building for the servants to live in. He also built a stage in the front yard of the villa, and often invited the troupe to sing for his mother. While Xu's mother sat in the villa and played at will. She was at ease and really had a good life. Today, the stage and the music pool are all here. It seems that we can still see the lively scene of Xu's mother sitting in the wide corridor listening to the opera.

The other children of Xu's mother saw that Xu Jingquan was so filial to her old mother, and they eagerly followed suit, competing to buy her new clothes and accessories. Xu's mother usually goes out in jewels, just like a rich woman from Southeast Asia. Neighbors call it "fanpo", and the villa she lives in is naturally called "fanpo building". There is a gate building in fanpo building. There are two positive and negative "Fu" characters on the two big iron doors. It means that you can see happiness when you enter the building, and you can see happiness when you go out. This is the new content of "Fu culture"!

Today's fanpo building is full of villagers pulling carts in the underground tide proof room, while the upstairs is rented to Bailin people who are going to Xiamen for gold. Among them are writers and artists who come to Gulangyu to experience life. They interview during the day and create freely in a quiet environment at night. People live in the house and are effectively protected. Therefore, the old style of fanpo building is still preserved.
