About Xuan Zang
Xuanzang was an eminent monk in the Tang Dynasty. In the first year of Emperor Taizong's Zhenguan reign (627 AD), when he was 26 years old, he decided to go to Tianzhu (ancient India), the holy land of Buddhism, to seek real Buddhist classics. In the state of mojietuo, he entered nalandao temple and studied yoga as a teacher. In the 18th year of Zhenguan (645 A.D.), he returned to China in the first month, and was warmly welcomed by Chang'an's "empty city going out of the temple". Emperor Taizong of Tang met him in person in Luoyang, Tokyo.
He presented 657 Sanskrit scriptures to the imperial court, and Taizong ordered him to translate them in Hongfu temple. After 19 years of hard work, 75 Buddhist scriptures, 1338 volumes and more than 13 million words have been translated. Buddhism gradually flourished, and master Xuanzang made outstanding contributions to the communication between Chinese and Indian cultures, especially the Buddhist culture.
Xuanzang passed away in the first year of Emperor Gaozong's reign (664 A.D.) and was named "dabianzhao" after his posthumous title. It is said that after Huang Chao's rebellion broke down Chang'an, Xuanzang's tomb tower was destroyed by fire, and then part of its spiritual bones were moved to Nanjing to erect a tower for worship. During the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, the pagoda collapsed, and then it was buried and no one could recognize it. In 1944, when the Japanese invaders built a shrine outside Zhonghua Gate in Nanjing, they found a stone letter dedicated to the parietal bone of master Xuanzang. At that time, some of them were taken away by the Japanese aggressors, and the remaining part was divided into five parts and consecrated in Beijing, Tianjin, Nanjing, Guangzhou and Sichuan. One in Tianjin was consecrated to the Dabei temple in 1954. In 1956, at the request of the Indian government and with the instruction of Premier Zhou Enlai, the parietal bone was sent to India to strengthen the cultural and Buddhist exchanges between China and India.
