Chongming east beach is located at the easternmost end of Chongming Island in Shanghai. It borders on the estuary of the Yangtze River in the north and south, and slowly extends eastward to the vast east China Sea, and is far away from the north and South continents. Chongming Dongtan Nature Reserve starts from xijiagang in the south, ends at beibafei port in the north, takes the dike built in 1968 as the boundary in the west, and ends at 3000m water line outside Wusong elevation zero meter line in the East. It belongs to Chongming Island's water area, land and beach within the imitated semicircular waterway line. With an area of 326 square kilometers, Chongming Dongtan Nature Reserve is a typical estuarine wetland in the Yangtze River Estuary. Among them, the natural reserve covers an area of 265 square kilometers, including 120 square kilometers of beaches above the zero meter line of Wusong elevation and 145 square kilometers of waters within 3000 meters outside the zero meter line of Wusong elevation. The area within the dyke is mainly constructed wetland, with an area of 61 square kilometers.

In particular, there were 3000 to 3500 swans wintering in Dongtan, a national first-class protected animal, and 20 to 3 million migratory birds from Australia, New Zealand, Japan and other countries. Among them, there are white goose, green heron, Chinese Egret and black faced Spoonbill.
Major developments
In 1992, China's biodiversity conservation action plan listed Chongming Dongtan as a wetland ecosystem of international significance. In 1999, Chongming Dongtan was accepted as a member of "East Asia Australia wading bird reserve network" by wetland International Asia Pacific Organization. In January 2002, Chongming Dongtan was designated as an important international wetland by the Secretariat of the Convention on wetlands. On September 14, 2002, Dongtan tourism officially started. The long dike is built with huge stones to commemorate, the trestle is built to get close to the wetland, the bamboo tower is built to overlook the East China Sea, and the post station is built for tourists' leisure. The mysterious veil of Dongtan is lifted. Dongtan migratory bird protection will be the focus of Chongming tourism development. According to the development layout of the master plan, the wetland park will be developed, the sunrise will be observed in Dongtan, the watchtower will be set up, the bird watching platform and bird museum will be built, the participatory amusement projects will be developed, and the "Farm Tour" will be opened up. At that time, it will become a tourist resort integrating leisure, sightseeing and recreation.
