synonym
Ocean University Museum generally refers to the Chinese Fish Culture Museum of Shanghai Ocean University
Located at No. 318, Jungong Road, Yangpu District, Shanghai, Shanghai Ocean University Museum of Chinese fish culture is a popular science and education base for aquatic organisms in Shanghai. It is one of the national culture museums in Shanghai universities, with a total construction area of 1036 square meters, 40000 specimens, about 3000 species and more than 1000 species on display.
Collection
The treasure of the Chinese Fish Culture Museum seems to be a bit overwhelming, eclipsing all the fish in its collection. As soon as you enter the museum, a huge sperm whale specimen stands in the center, with a white skeleton beside it. It is said that this exhibition hall is specially designed for this sperm whale specimen, "treatment" is not high.
This sperm whale specimen and its skeleton are 18.4 meters long, which is the largest sperm whale specimen in China. This whale is named "sperm whale" because it can produce a kind of gray or black secretion ambergris. It is the most famous one among all the large toothed whales. It and two small close relatives, namely, small sperm whale and dwarf sperm whale, are separately listed as a family - sperm whale family. Therefore, strictly speaking, they are not fish, but mammals.
The head of sperm whale accounts for about 1 / 3 of the body length, and the position of nostril is asymmetric with the body axis, far to the left, which is a very unique and interesting example of body asymmetry in mammals. Adult sperm whales are generally 15-20 meters long, so this collection of sperm whale specimens can be described as the "tall man" of the same kind.
The main food of sperm whale is squid and all kinds of small sharks, so there are stories about sperm whale fighting with the giant squid "King squid" in the squid all over the world. The giant squid looks fierce, but in fact it is very fragile. Its blood oxygen carrying capacity is very poor. It is a natural "anemia patient". Therefore, sperm whale always wins more than loses in the fight with the giant squid. Occasionally, there are unfortunate sperm whales with the "King squid" entangled in the nostril was blocked suffocated to death. As for why the sperm whale in the collection died, it has become a permanent mystery.
Production process
This sperm whale specimen is an "uninvited guest" of the museum. Where did it come from and how was it made into a specimen?
The time can be traced back to the morning of May 14, 2001. The fishing boat "guibeiyu 12025" of Beihai, Guangxi, went out to sea as usual. When it arrived at the Qiongzhou Strait, it found the body of a giant whale, which was then towed back to the shore of Beihai. At the beginning, no one paid attention to the whale, and it was not until some institutions in Guangdong and Fujian expressed their willingness to buy that the whale attracted the attention of relevant departments. At that time, the fisheries administration of the Ministry of agriculture of the people's Republic of China came forward to show that the giant whale is a second-class protected animal of the state, and it is not allowed to kill, sell, transport and use it without permission. The whale was owned by the state according to law, and then Shanghai Fisheries University decided to make a specimen of the whale for scientific research and teaching.
Then experts from Shanghai Fisheries University flew to Beihai and identified the whale as a male sperm whale. However, because the corpse had smelled after being stored for many days, the experts had to dissect it on the spot together with the relevant personnel. A lot of lime and alcohol were used to bury the viscera on the spot. The experts then simply processed the bones and skins of the sperm whale, numbered them one by one, and then transported the bones and skins weighing up to 5 tons to Shanghai by a 10 ton refrigerated truck.
After arriving in Shanghai, Shanghai Fisheries University and Xiamen Shang Dynasty Institute of biological specimens studied and peeled the specimens together. After one year, they were finally restored to two complete specimens: a sperm whale skin specimen and a sperm whale skeleton.
Compared with these two huge "treasures of the town hall", other exhibits can only be regarded as green leaves, but if they are displayed separately, they are also treasures. Among them are Leopard Shark donated by Shanghai marine aquarium, grouper, Chinese sturgeon, Chinese alligator, red sea turtle, teeth of sperm whale, whalebone of Brandt's whale and all kinds of snails.
The specimen is 3.3 meters long and weighs 319 kg, which is the largest one in China. Acipenser sinensis is one of the most primitive species of fish in the mainstream of the Yangtze River in China. It has a history of 140 million years on the earth and is known as the "living fossil". At the same time, it is also the southernmost species of sturgeons, ranking first among the 27 species of sturgeons in the world. What is more emotional is its "loyalty" -- it always travels back to the hometown of the Yangtze River to have children, so it gets the name "Zhonghua". In a sense, it is the nature of the Chinese nation that it shows its amazing ability to endure hunger, work hard, know the way and identify the direction.
In addition, the most colorful snails in the exhibition hall are many kinds of snails, such as conch, vortex snail, spider snail, and four valuable snails, namely Tangguan snail, Dafa snail, Nautilus and Weng Rong snail. Their shapes are unique and attractive.

From herbarium to Museum
In 1952, Zhu Yuanding, a famous ichthyologist, founded the fish herbarium of Shanghai Fisheries University. In the early days of the founding of the people's Republic of China, equipment, personnel and funds were very tight. Zhu Yuanding led his colleagues to overcome many difficulties and collect fish specimens and data by themselves. In just a few years, more than 900 species and 25000 numbers of specimens were collected in the Herbarium, forming a primary scale and soon becoming an important base for ichthyology research in China. Since then, the herbarium has been renamed as the fish laboratory. By 2000, the fish laboratory has been one of the four bases for the study of fish taxonomy in China.
In 2002, the laboratory obtained the largest sperm whale specimen with a length of 18.4 meters. The research laboratory was upgraded and evolved into the whale Hall of Shanghai Fisheries University.
At the end of 2005, the China fish culture museum was inaugurated in the former Shanghai Fisheries University at 334 Jungong road. At the same time, Shanghai Fisheries University signed a cooperation agreement with Shanghai marine aquarium, which opened the prelude to the establishment and protection of China fish culture museum.
Nowadays, Shanghai Ocean University is increasingly moving to Nanhui Lingang New Campus, and China fish culture museum will be renamed again. Starting from 2008, the new campus will build China's first museum with the theme of ocean, realizing the transformation from fish culture to ocean culture. The building area of the new museum will reach 7000 square meters, and 12 exhibition halls will be set up, including fish culture museum, fishery History Museum, fishing gear and fishing method Museum, to become a professional museum integrating teaching, scientific research, science popularization and cultural inheritance.
