Historical evolution
In the Ming Dynasty, Jiuwan Hutong got its name from a small temple, which was called Prajna Temple Hutong and belonged to zhengnanfang. At the end of the Qing Dynasty, it was renamed Jiuquwan because of its winding and changeable hutongs. After the Republic of China, it was called Jiudaowan. In 1965, it was renamed Jiuwan Hutong. In the early years, the Hutong was derived from the river and ditch, so the curvilinear character had a three point water side.
Jiuwan Hutong, as the name suggests, is famous for its many turns. From east to west, there are straight, sharp, oblique and gentle bends in the length of less than 380 meters. It's really a series of bends. Entering from the east entrance of the Hutong, it is a little spacious, just like the general Hutong. The farther to the west, the narrower the hutong is. The narrowest part of the western end of the Hutong can only accommodate one person. After counting twice from east to west, I found that there were nine straight bends, four oblique bends and four gentle bends, and the other small slight bends were ignored, with a total of 13 bends. I'm afraid that there are so many turns in a Hutong in Beijing. Most of Beijing's hutongs are straight to the point, but if you walk into the Jiudaowan Hutong near Beixinqiao, you will get lost. The small hutong is divided into five parts, but you turn 19 turns. It's strange that you don't get lost. There is also a Jiudaowan Hutong in Xicheng District, but it has been renamed Baidai Hutong now. The Jiuwan Hutong outside the front gate is still there. In fact, it takes 13 turns.
Related Legends
In view of the west entrance of Jiuwan Hutong, there are many mysterious sayings: it's unlucky to go west. Li Hong, an octogenarian, said with a look of fear in her eyes when she talked about the west end of the Hutong: "I've never been in or out of the west end of the Hutong since I was so big. The west entrance of Jiuwan hutong is relatively small and remote, with few people walking, and most of the residents are concentrated in the East. When the people's Republic of China was just liberated, there was a homicide case at the west end of the Hutong. The old residents in the Hutong believed that it was unlucky to go to Ximen, so all kinds of opinions spread. There are not many residents who really use the west exit of Hutong to import and export. "
Master Li, who lives in yard 10 of Jiuwan Hutong, said that the name of Jiuwan Hutong comes from the fact that there are nine 90 degree turns in the Hutong. In fact, according to the brick line, there are 13 turns in the Hutong. Master Li revealed that in the Hutong, the happiest game for boys is to ride bicycles and play drifting in the bend. When he was young, he also liked to take part in bicycle races: first, he rode from the east to the West. Whoever rode the fastest and whose handlebars were not rubbed by the wall was considered to be the most skilled.
