Gu pinzhen and Tang Jiyao were important military generals following Cai E's "Chongjiu uprising". After the death of Cai E, Tang Jiyao became the governor of Yunnan and actually controlled the power of Yunnan. In 1921, Gu pinzhen drove Tang Jiyao away and took charge of the Yunnan political power. At that time, Zhu De was under Gu pinzhen's command and supported Gu's "overthrowing the Tang Dynasty", so he served as the commander of Kunming police and later the director of Yunnan provincial police department. In 1922, Tang Jiyao colluded with the bandit Wu Xuexian to expel Gu pinzhen, who died in Lunan (now Shilin County). Zhu De was also wanted by Tang Jiyao for supporting Gu pinzhen, so he left Yunnan for Germany and embarked on the revolutionary road.
In 2005, Gu pinzhen's old house was demolished because of the tuojianhua Shanxi road. A "monument to Gu pinzhen's old house" was set up in the courtyard of the original house.
