Former residence of Zhang Xueliang

The former residence of Zhang Xueliang in Shanghai is located in Gaolan road. It is a Spanish style garden house. The roof is decorated with red tiles, the outer walls are milky white, and there are some exquisite decorations under the eaves. The whole building is elegant and full of interest. Zhang Xueliang lived in such a western style house when he came to Shanghai for the third time in 1935.

The main building of the former residence covers an area of about 800 square meters. There is a hall downstairs, which is the place for banquet. The reception room is on the second floor, and the bedrooms of Zhang Xueliang and Zhao Yidi are on the third floor. It is a Spanish style suite, in which there is a Spanish style big bed, which is imitated as it is. There is a platform of 20 square meters outside the house. There is a large garden in front of the building, covering an area of about 1000 square meters, now known as Diyuan. Camphor, cedar, wisteria, Magnolia, Osmanthus fragrans and cinnamon are planted in the garden. The lawn is Manila style, and there are swings for several people.

Zhang Xueliang's former residence is located at No.32 road of French Concession (now 78 Chifeng Road, Heping District). It is a western style building. The front building was built in 1921, and the back building was built in 1926. Zhang came to Tianjin in the 1920s and 1930s to live here.

There are two brick and wood buildings in the former residence of Zhang family. The front building has three floors with basement and the back building has two floors. There are 42 buildings in the two buildings, with a construction area of 1270.4 square meters. The total construction area is 1401.65 square meters, covering an area of 1.495 mu.

Profile

Zhang Xueliang, Han Qing, was born in 1901 in Haicheng, Liaoning Province. Graduated from the Northeast Jiangwu academy, he has successively served as commander of brigade, division and army, commander of regiment, commander of northeast security, commander of northeast frontier defense, deputy commander in chief of land, sea and air force, director of appeasement in Beiping, chairman of Beiping branch of the Military Commission, commander in chief of "suppressing bandits" in Northwest China. In 1936, Zhang Xueliang and Yang Hucheng of the northwest army launched the "Xi'an Incident" which shocked both China and foreign countries (December 12, 1936). They detained Chiang Kai Shek and forced him to resist Japan, laying the foundation for the second Kuomintang communist cooperation and the national anti Japanese war.

There are two brick and wood buildings in the former residence of Zhang family. The front building was built in 1921 with three floors and basement; the back building was built in 1926 with two floors. There are 42 buildings in the two buildings, with a construction area of 1270.4 square meters. The total construction area is 1401.65 square meters, covering an area of 1.495 mu.

The building is luxurious, beautiful and generous. There are roof platforms on the second and third floors of the front building; the interior is spacious and elegant, and the internal stairs, floors, doors and windows are made of Philippine wood; the hospital has complete sanitary equipment and widely planted lawn.

The building was purchased from the French Consulate in the name of Zhang Shouyi (fifth lady of Zhang zuolin). After 1949, Zhang Shouyi went to Hong Kong and was managed by his son, Zhang Xuequan. In 1956, after the private house was transformed, it was managed by the state, and in 1960, it was changed into public property.
