Built history
Chiwan has an important geographical location. According to historical records, ancient ships travelling between Guangzhou and Nanyang countries all passed through here. Since the Ming Dynasty, the government has set up piers and abutments in the nearby Nanshan to prevent pirates. During the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty (1662-1722), the fort was built in Chiwan, and the fort was built in 1717. At that time, Fujian Governor Yang Lin was transferred to Guangdong governor. He presided over the construction of 126 military facilities such as coastal fort, city wall and defense area, including 26 in the artillery. Chiwan fort is one of them. According to records, Chiwan left and right fort has thousands of soldiers, six pig iron cannons and 12 cannons, which are called "Falangji" cannons. They are Western-style weapons. Their manufacturing method was introduced from Guangzhou in the Northern Song Dynasty. During the Opium War, Lin Zexu defended the Pearl River Estuary and rebuilt the Chiwan fort. Guan Tianpei, the commander of Guangdong Navy, led the troops to defeat the British in Lingdingyang. Chiwan fort made great contributions to Lin Zexu's ban on smoking.
Introduction of current situation
The fort is located in the East Village of Chiwan, Nanshan District, standing on the top of Yingzui mountain, 170 meters above sea level. In the trees of the left Fort, there is a outpost. It is said that at the beginning of the founding of new China, before the southeast coastal islands were liberated, the troops at that time were stationed in the Tianhou palace in Chiwan. As long as you stand on the top of Yingzui mountain and have a panoramic view of Chiwan Peninsula, the troops decided to set up a post here. There is a huge telescope in the post, like sleepless eyes, always watching the Lingdingyang sea with vigilance. At that time, soldiers usually sleep with their clothes at night, with guns on their side and bullets loaded. At the beginning of reform and opening up, Chiwan left Fort was still included in the military restricted zone. With the further reform and opening up, the military strategic position of the left Fort has gradually weakened.
In the vicissitudes of history, only the left Fort of Chiwan fort is well preserved. The local authorities repaired the fort in 1985. The restored left Fort stands on the top of Yingzui mountain, 170 meters above sea level. It faces south from north and is divided into two parts: the platform and the wall. It is 26.2 meters long, 15.5 meters wide, 4.5 meters high and 3.78 meters high, covering an area of about 400 square meters.
After the return of Hong Kong in 1997, the ban was lifted. The sentry post, which once played an important role, is preserved on Yingzui mountain as a historical witness.
Tourist attractions
The base of the fort city is built with massive granite. To the north is the entrance of the fort city. In the East and west sides of the city, there are still two remains of houses. They are the homes of the soldiers guarding the fort at that time.
The high platform in the south is more than 8 meters wide, which is the place to use artillery positions. On the fort, an ancient cannon looks at the mouth of the Pearl River. Although its barrel is rusty, its majestic and unyielding posture can still be seen.
On the wall to the west of the fort, two hundred year old banyan trees have deeply rooted their roots in the wall. They are closely intertwined with the wall. They are almost integrated with the wall. There is no fertile soil, but they are luxuriant. Life is so tough and vitality is so exuberant.
To the north of the left Fort is a bronze statue of Lin Zexu, which was made in 1985, the bicentennial of his birth. With a height of 3.2 meters and a weight of 1.8 tons, the bronze statue is the largest one of Lin Zexu in China. The statue was created by Tang Daxi, a famous sculptor in China. On the front of the marble base, it is a "memorial statue of Lin Zexu" inscribed by the late calligrapher Zhao Puchu. On the north side, it is engraved with an inscription written by Xie Hua. Lin Zexu, a great patriot, holds a single telescope and wears a long sword. He stares at the rolling Lingdingyang with bright eyes.
The swagger before others, Lin Zexu destructed opium, but he was exiled and sent to the lonely seas. The strong guns of the invaders were in the air of Humen. After 160 years, the territory that had been ceded was returned to the embrace of the motherland. The mountain was already a busy port. Perhaps, today, Lin Zexu is very pleased to see the lonely ocean.
