Architectural history
Before 1949
See: Dharma movement
The former site of Sun Yat Sen's Grand Marshal's mansion was Guangdong shimentou cement plant, which was built in 1907. It was the second largest cement plant in China at that time, and its output was second only to Tianjin Kaiping cement plant. The building is designed by Australian Purnell and Paget. The main building consists of two North and south buildings, which are connected by overhead corridors in the middle. They are Italian houses with three floors, double sloping roof with grey back tile surface, and arched veranda on each floor.
In July 1917, after Zhang Xun's restoration, Duan Qirui planned to "rebuild the Republic" and abolish the Congress elected in 1913. Sun Yat Sen launched the "Law Protection Movement" and led part of the navy to go south to Guangzhou to hold an extraordinary session of the Congress and expropriate this place as the Grand Marshal's residence. In May 1918, because of the destruction and interference of GUI warlords in Guangzhou, the movement of protecting the law failed. Sun Yat Sen left Guangzhou after he resigned from the Grand Marshal of the Navy and army.
In 1920, after Chen Jiongming, a military general of Guangdong, defeated the GUI and Dian warlords in Guangzhou, Sun Yat Sen returned to Guangzhou and cancelled the military government. In March 1923, he established the headquarters of the Grand Marshal of the army and Navy here. Shortly after the establishment of the base camp, Shen Hongying's rebellion and Dongjiang's rebellion were put down, and the Chinese Kuomintang was reorganized.
On March 12, 1925, Sun Yat Sen passed away. In July 1925, the national government was formally established in Guangzhou, and the base camp also completed its historical mission. Later, it was rebuilt into the National Father culture and Education Museum, Guangdong and Guangdong Branch, National Father memorial hall, etc.
After 1949
After the PLA captured Guangzhou in 1949, it became the office building of the army and relevant departments of Guangdong Province. From 1964 to 1998, it was used as office and accommodation buildings by Guangdong agricultural machinery supply company, and three residential quarters were built within the protection area. The corridor connecting the north and south buildings was demolished. In 1981, at the first meeting of the Fifth Committee of the Chinese people's Political Consultative Conference in Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province, a proposal appeared for the first time, calling for the early maintenance of the former site of Marshal Sun Yat Sen's mansion in Henan Province, Guangzhou city. In 1984, a similar proposal was put forward again at the second meeting of the sixth Guangzhou Municipal Committee of the Chinese people's Political Consultative Conference.
In August 1983, the former site of Marshal Sun Yat Sen's mansion was designated as the second batch of key cultural relics protection units by Guangzhou Municipal People's government. In June 1989, it was listed as a key cultural relic protection unit in Guangdong Province. In 1992, Guangdong agricultural machinery supply company completed the project report of relocation application for the restoration of Marshal Sun Yat Sen's mansion, which was approved by Guangzhou municipal government in the same year. In November 1996, the former site of Marshal Sun Yat Sen's mansion was listed as a national key cultural relic protection unit by the State Council.
On October 19, 1998, Guangzhou municipal government took over the former site of Marshal Sun Yat Sen's mansion, relocated 60 households in the first phase of the protection area, and began to prepare for the construction of the memorial hall of Marshal Sun Yat Sen's mansion. From 1999 to 2000, the renovation of the North Building and the south building began. During this period, the original six storey dormitory building was relocated at a cost of 15 million yuan to rebuild the gate building of Grand Marshal's mansion. In July 2001, the renovation of the south building was completed, and an exhibition on the restoration of the centenary mansion was held. The memorial hall was opened to the public for the first time. In December 2001, the renovation of the north building was completed, and an exhibition of historical materials on "Sun Yat Sen's establishment of political power in Guangzhou three times" was held, realizing the second phase opening. In 2002, the restoration project of the former Damen building was completed, and 70 households within the protection area of phase II were relocated. On May 1, 2006, the memorial hall of Marshal Sun Yat Sen's mansion was officially opened to the public.
In August 2010, in order to welcome the Asian Games, Guangzhou municipal authorities demolished the dangerous buildings around the Marshal's mansion and the Jiangwan bridge approach bridge in front of the gate, built the new Marshal's mansion square, and repaired and maintained the memorial hall. On October 20, Grand Marshal's residence was reopened for free admission.
In 2012, the planning department of Guangzhou decided to take back a piece of sold land near the Grand Marshal's mansion for the construction of a 6300 square meter Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hall as a supporting exhibition site for the Grand Marshal's mansion, so as to solve the problem that the revolutionary cultural relics could not be displayed due to insufficient location.
