Harbin Red Army Street
Basic overview
Red Army Street is located in Nangang District, Harbin City, Heilongjiang Province. It was built in 1898, formerly known as station street and horwat street. It starts from Harbin Railway Station Square in the north and ends at Majiagou Zhongshan Bridge in the south, with a total length of 1266 meters. The intersection of this street and Dazhi street in the museum square constitutes a major cross traffic thoroughfare in the center of Harbin Central District. In 1949, to commemorate the liberation of the Soviet Red Army in Northeast China, it was renamed Red Army Street.
Historical development
During the period of the Republic of China, the advance team of the Middle East Railway Engineering Bureau settled down in the tianjiashaoguo in Xiangfang, and a large number of people from the Engineering Bureau later anchored in today's Xiaojiu station by boat. They used carriages to transport equipment and road construction materials between the two places, from the current central street to qinjiagang, through Majiagou to old Harbin (now Xiangfang), and pedestrians and vehicles came and went to press out this muddy road.
Later, with the completion of Harbin railway station and St. Nicholas's Cathedral in the center of the city, the street naturally flourished. Around the museum square (also known as lamatai Square), they planned the radioactive traffic road pattern. At the same time, they also built large-scale construction around the square. Russian style buildings sprang up, and railway residences came into being.
Because the museum square is the commanding height of the city, the streets and buildings formed here reflect the traditional European urban planning pattern of taking the church as the center. For a long time, the St. Nicholas cathedral on the Red Army Street has become the symbol of "Oriental Moscow".
