The origin of Lingquan Temple
Lingquan temple is located in Lingquan mountain in the east of Suining City, facing Guangde Temple across the Fujiang River. The temple is built on the mountain, with pines, cypresses and trees. There is a spring in the mountain, which is green in color and sweet in taste. It never overflows or dries up all the year round. It is called "Lingquan". According to records, Su Dongpo once wrote a poem "seven springs" in Shibi, but it has disappeared. Lingquan temple was built in the kaihuang period of Emperor Wen of Sui Dynasty (581-600). It was called shengfo temple at that time. After reconstruction in the third year of Hongzhi of emperor Xiaozong of Ming Dynasty (1490), the temple was named after a mountain. According to the records of Yu Di Ji Sheng, Lingquan mountain, in the kaihuang period of Sui Dynasty, was dissolved because of the fog for three days. Suddenly, a stone statue of Sakyamuni stood in its place, so it was called shengfo temple. In the Northern Song Dynasty, Zhenzong gave the name zishengyuan. After reconstruction in the third year of Hongzhi (1490), Xiaozong of Ming Dynasty, it was named Lingquan temple. In the heyday of Sui, Tang, song and Ming Dynasties, incense flourished, and there was an endless stream of pilgrims from southwest provinces. It was known as the holy land of Lingquan and the holy land of the West. It was almost as famous as Putuo Mountain in the South China Sea and has been listed in the National Dictionary of scenic spots. It is now the center of Buddhist activities and a tourist attraction in Central Sichuan. Every year, February 19, June 19 and September 19 are the birthday, monastic day and Dharma Day of Guanyin Bodhisattva respectively. At that time, believers from all over the world gather and have a lot of fun.
