Personal contribution
Tao Xingzhi devoted his life to education. In his early years, he studied in the United States and studied under Dewey. After returning home, he vigorously promoted civilian education, especially rural education, and successively established Xiaozhuang Normal School, life education society, Shanhai engineering group and other schools. He believed that the popular education method at that time was "dead reading, dead reading, dead reading". Therefore, it advocates "life is education", "society is school" and "integration of teaching and learning". The thatched cottage auditorium of Xiaozhuang Normal School, which he founded, is named "Li Gong". The couplet on both sides is "make friends with horses, cattle, sheep, chickens, dogs and pigs, and work hard on rice, rice, rice, rice, rice, rice, rice, rice, rice, rice, rice, rice, rice, rice, rice, rice, rice, rice, rice, rice, rice, rice, rice, rice, rice, rice, rice, rice, rice, rice, rice, rice, rice, rice. At that time, it was really commendable for a famous scholar who had obtained a doctorate. Most of his works are about education, mainly including complete works of Tao Xingzhi (11 volumes, more than 5 million words).
Tao Xingzhi's thought has been progressing with the development of the times. His original name was Tao Wenjun. Later, he changed his name to Tao Zhixing because he was in favor of the theory of "unity of practice and knowledge". In practice, he thought that action should come before knowledge, and he changed his name to Tao Xingzhi. After the "12.9" movement, with the help and influence of the party, he actively participated in the Anti Japanese democratic activities and realized that education should serve the nation and the democratic revolution. He successively established educational schools and social universities, and cultivated many revolutionary talents. Li Peng and Zhang Jinfu were his students. Comrade Zhou Enlai once spoke highly of him, saying that he was "a non party Bolshevik who followed the party without reservation". Tao Xingzhi worked hard and plain all his life and devoted himself to the people. "Come with one heart and go without half a root of grass" is his two words of self encouragement, which is a glorious portrayal of his life. At the age of 55, he died of overwork. Comrade Mao Zedong called him "a great people's educator", and Song Qingling called him "a model for all generations" in his inscription. All his life, he was widely respected by progressive people both inside and outside the party and at home and abroad.
