Qilian Mountains, located in the northeast of Qinghai Province and the western border of Gansu Province, is one of the main mountains in China. It is composed of many parallel mountains and wide valleys with northwest southeast trend. It is 800 kilometers long from east to west, 200-400 kilometers wide from north to south, and 4000-6000 meters above sea level. There are 3306 glaciers, covering an area of about 2062 square kilometers.
The west end is at Dangjin pass, which connects with the Altyn Mountains. East to the Yellow River Valley, and Qinling, Liupanshan connected. It is nearly 1000 kilometers long. It belongs to fold fault block mountain. The widest is between Jiuquan City and Qaidam Basin, up to 300 km.
The mountains range from northwest to Southeast, including Daxue mountain, Tuolai mountain, Tuolai mountain, YEMA mountain, Shule mountain, Danghe mountain, turgen Daban mountain, Chaidamu mountain and Zongwulong mountain. Most of the peaks are 4000-5500 meters above sea level. Tuanjie peak, the highest peak in shulenan mountain, is 5808 meters above sea level. Mountains above 4000 meters above sea level are covered with snow all the year round, and valleys between mountains are between 3000 and 3500 meters above sea level.
Qilian Mountain, known as "Wanbaoshan", contains a wide range of high-quality minerals, including asbestos, pyrite, chromite, copper, lead, zinc and other minerals. Babaoshan asbestos is a rare raw material for wet spinning in China. The cold and humid climate in Qilian mountain area is favorable for the growth of forage. In the area above 2800 meters above sea level, there are large grasslands, which provide a good place for the development of animal husbandry.
Since 2017, China has started the pilot work of establishing Qilian Mountain National Park in the Qilian mountain area.
The origin of the name
Qilian Mountain originally refers to the northernmost mountain range in the south of Hexi Corridor (the west end of the south mountain of the corridor, with an altitude of 5547 meters), or "Qilian Mountain" in a narrow sense. "Qilian" is Xiongnu language, Hun Hutian is "Qilian", Qilian mountain means "Tianshan". Because it is located in the south of Hexi Corridor, it was also called Nanshan in history, as well as Xueshan and Baishan. In the early years of the Western Han Dynasty, Huo Qubing went to the West and conquered the Xiongnu, "if I lost Qilian Mountain, I would not have enough livestock; if I lost Yanzhi mountain, I would have no color to marry." This is the "Qilian Mountain" referred to in Xiongnu folk songs. Later, it generally refers to a series of mountains which are connected in geology or geomorphology between Gansu and Qinghai.

Qilian Mountains, or "Qilian Mountains" in a broad sense, is the general name of the border mountains in the west of Gansu Province and the northeast of Qinghai Province. It is located at the junction of Gansu and Qinghai provinces, starting from Songshan in Wushaoling in the East, dangjinshankou in the west, Hexi Corridor in the north and Qaidam Basin in the south. Composition of mountain system
The Qilian Mountains are 870 km long from east to west and 100-200 km wide from north to south in Qinghai Province. Most of the peaks are between 4500 and 5500 meters, and most of them are high mountains except the main peak, zewujie, which is 5808 meters above sea level. The Qilian Mountains are composed of a series of nww-se trending mountains with valleys separating them. In the broad sense, the secondary mountains in the Qilian Mountains are distributed from north to south.
Traditionally, it is divided into West Qilian Mountain and east Qilian Mountain by Yumen City Petroleum River (or Baiyang River). The Eastern Qilian Mountains have the corridor Nanshan, Lenglongling and its branches Dahuang mountain, Maya snow mountain and Maomao mountain. It is higher in the northwest and lower in the southeast, with a general altitude of 2000-4500 m; the relative elevation difference is 1000-2000 m, with the main vein between 4000-5000 m above sea level, and the Jingtieshan mountain to the south of Jiuquan is 5205 m above sea level. The West Qilian Mountains include Zhaobi mountain, Taole mountain and taolenan mountain: Daxue mountain, shulenan mountain, YEMA mountain, YEMA mountain, Danghe mountain, turgen Daban mountain and Saishiteng mountain. Corridor Nanshan, because it is located in the south of Hexi Corridor and named. Lenglongling, also known as laolongling, is located in the north of babaohe River and Datonghe River in Qinghai Province. It extends from Heihe River in the west to the east of Menyuan County. In Qinghai Province, it is 280 km long and 30-50 km wide. Most of the peaks are 4000-5000 m above sea level. The highest peak is located to the north of qingshizui, with an altitude of 5254 M. most of the peaks above 4500 have modern glaciers. Wushaoling is the southeast end of Lenglongling, which is the westernmost end of East Asian monsoon and the natural boundary between Longzhong plateau and Hexi corridor. It is the boundary of the first and second step of China's topography, the dividing line between the monsoon region and the non monsoon region, the inner flow region and the outer flow region, the intersection of the Loess Plateau, the Qinghai Tibet Plateau and the Inner Mongolia Plateau, and the dividing line of the transition from the semi-arid region to the arid region.
Tuolai mountain means "mountain with firewood" in Mongolian. It's also called Mulei mountain. There are also Taolai mountain, Tuole mountain, Taolai mountain and other names. Tuolai mountain is located between Heihe River, Babao River and the upper reaches of Tuolai River and Datong River. It starts from qingshizui in Menyuan County in the East and extends westward to erzhihalashan pass. It is 350 km long and 20 km wide in the province. The mountain peaks are generally between 4000 and 4500 m above sea level, with the highest peak at 4849 m above sea level. There are a few modern glaciers in the mountain peak above 4500 meters. The northwest part of the mountain is higher, which is the main part of Tuolai mountain. The southeast part is lower, which is called Moeller mountain, also known as EBO mountain.
Tuolai Nanshan, also known as basola mountain, also has the names of Taolai Nanshan, Tuole Nanshan and Taolai Nanshan. Tuolai south mountain is located between Shule River and Tuolai River, which is divided by Shule River and Daxueshan in the northwest, and the upper reaches of Sala River and moele mountain in the southeast. The west section is the boundary mountain of Qinghai and Gansu provinces, and the east section is all in Qinghai Province. In Qinghai Province, it is 200 km long and 20-25 km wide. The mountain peaks are generally between 4500-5000 m above sea level. The highest peak is wudeeqin, with an altitude of 5294 M. the peaks above 4500 m generally have modern glaciers.
South Shule mountain is located in the south of Shule River and the north of Dang River and Hala lake. In Qinghai Province, it starts from the source of Datong River in the East and extends westward to Qinghai near yaoletegou, a tributary of Danghe river. In Qinghai Province, it stretches for 350 km and is 30-50 km wide. The mountain peaks are generally 4500-5500 m above sea level. The western section of Shule Nanshan is called YEMA Nanshan in Gansu Province, and the middle and eastern sections are in Qinghai Province. The highest part of the middle section is also the highest part of the Qilian Mountains uplift. The mountains above 5000 meters are widely distributed. There are three peaks above 5500 meters. The highest peak is gangze, once known as Tuanjie peak, with an altitude of 5808 meters. The eastern section is called shaguolinnamujimuling. Modern glaciers are well developed in the middle and eastern sections, and there are eight large snow mountains.
Datong mountain is located between the Buha River and the Datong River. In the west, it transits with shulenan mountain at the source of the Datong River and the Buha River. In the East, it connects with Daban mountain by Beichuan River and salagou, a tributary of the Datong River. The broad sense of Datong mountain includes Daban mountain, but most of the maps published in modern times put Daban mountain and Datong mountain side by side as the first grade of Qilian Mountains. Datong mountain is a vast mountain, and its plane is in the shape of jujube nucleus from northwest to Southeast. The main ridge is in the north, close to the Datong River. The vein still exists. The mountain peaks are generally 4000-4500 meters above sea level. In the south, due to the cutting of Qinghai lake water system and Huangshui River, the mountains are low and broken, and the vein is unclear. The elevation of the peaks is about 4000 meters. Datong mountain is 300 km long and 50-60 km wide. It is high in the northwest and low in the southeast. Its highest peak is at the western end, with an altitude of 4849 meters.
