Dagou British Consulate is the first complete and solid foreign-style house in Taiwan. The foreign-style house is built on a small hill and has a very advantageous geographical location. It faces the Taiwan Strait in the West and is the only way for cargo ships to enter and leave Kaohsiung port. Facing Kaohsiung City in the East, it overlooks the City and port of Kaohsiung. Looking up from the small slope next to shaochuantou police station, you can still feel the strong momentum of the old red brick gate. Although the gate has been renovated many times and the houses on both sides are close to each other, the four characters of "north gate of Xiongzhen" on the forehead of the gate still show the heroic spirit. Now, it has become an open-air cafe, full of romantic atmosphere, and a perfect place for Kaohsiung people to relax in the afternoon and at night. You can enjoy the "consul's wife afternoon tea" and enjoy the beautiful nature at the same time.

Historical evolution
Kaohsiung was developed very early. Together with Tainan, Beigang, Chiayi and Matou, it is known as the place with the longest history in Taiwan. It was originally the residence of the Pingpu Aboriginal people (the makadao people). Because it is rich in bamboo, it was named "Takau" (Pingpu language, meaning bamboo forest). It is transliterated as "Dagou" in Chinese, and "Dagou" is the earliest name of Kaohsiung. In the early days of the Japanese rule, the Japanese thought that the place name "Dagou" was indecent, so they changed it to "Kaohsiung", because the pronunciation of "Kaohsiung" in Japanese was "taka-o", which was similar to that of "Dagou".
After the signing of Tianjin treaty in 1858 and Beijing treaty in 1860, Taiwan was forced to gradually open its trading ports, among which dog beating was one. In order to expand the economic benefits of trade with Taiwan, Britain took the lead in setting up a consulate in Taiwan. This western style building was built as an official residence on the hill at the bow of the sentry boat at Dagou harbor. It also set up a consulate office on the seashore of the sentry boat bow to act as an agent for business affairs, overseas Chinese protection and local negotiations, and exercise jurisdiction.
