In the second year of Yuanshou (121 BC) of Emperor Wu of Han Dynasty, Huo Qubing, a general of Hushi, drove Wanqi out of Longxi, across Yanzhi mountain and Hanyang (damaying) grassland to the west end of Qilian Mountains. Northern Wei Dynasty

Tang Dynasty
In the early Tang Dynasty, Taizong Li Shimin ordered his servant Zhang Jingshun to take charge of horse husbandry for 24 years. During the peak period of horse husbandry in the Tang Dynasty, there were more than 70000 horses.

Republic of China

The People's Republic of China
On September 21, 1949, the Chinese people's Liberation Army officially took over the Shandan army horse farm on the order of Chairman Mao Zedong, and the first field army of the Chinese people's Liberation Army took over the Shandan army ranch.
In January 1950, it was named shandanjun ranch of the rear service army of the northwest military region of the Chinese people's Liberation Army. In 1953, Shandan army ranch was renamed the first military horse farm of the northwest military region command of the Chinese people's Liberation Army. The main task is to produce light cavalry for the army.
In 1955, the first military horse farm was renamed Shandan military horse farm of the rear service department of the PLA, which was under the jurisdiction of the General Logistics Department.
In March 1957, according to the instructions of the State Council, Shandan military horse farm was handed over by the General Logistics Department of the people's Liberation Army to the Ministry of agriculture and reclamation for management, and was renamed state-owned Shandan ranch, a state-owned agricultural and animal husbandry enterprise.
