Xinjiang University is a national key university. It is a national "211 Project" construction university, a national key construction university in western development, and a University jointly built by the Ministry of education and the people's Government of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. "Historical evolution" the predecessor of Xinjiang University is the Russian law and politics special school founded in 1924. In January 1935, it was transformed into Xinjiang University. On October 1, 1960, Xinjiang University was officially established. In 1978, it was identified as the only national key university in Xinjiang by the State Council. In 1997, it was listed as the key construction University of the national "211 Project". In 2000, it was identified as the key construction University of the national western development. On December 30, 2000, Xinjiang University merged with the former Xinjiang Institute of technology to form a new Xinjiang University. In 2004, the University became a University jointly built by the people's Government of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and the Ministry of education.

Xinjiang University has 23 colleges, 1 Graduate School, 1 independent college, 1 teaching and research department, 4 teaching practice centers, 8 research institutes and 1 International Research Center for sustainable development of arid and semi-arid regions.

There are nine disciplines of philosophy, economics, law, literature, history, science, engineering, management and art in the school, covering the main fields of advanced professional training and scientific research. At present, there are 85 undergraduate majors, 10 national characteristic majors, 19 talents shortage majors in autonomous regions; 8 first level disciplines authorized by doctoral degree, 47 second level disciplines authorized by doctoral degree, 9 post doctoral research mobile stations, 29 first level disciplines authorized by master's degree, 154 second level disciplines authorized by master's degree, 8 master's degree categories; 2 national key disciplines, 1 national key discipline（ Six "211 Project" key construction discipline groups, 16 autonomous region level key disciplines and 2 autonomous region key (cultivation) disciplines.

"Scientific research" in 2012, Xinjiang University received 616 scientific research projects (special projects), and the funding continued to exceed 100 million yuan, reaching 150.9917 million yuan. Eight major key projects have been approved, including one national science and technology support plan project, two National Natural Science Foundation Xinjiang joint fund key projects, one national key basic research and development plan special project, one national science and technology basic work special project, one national "863 project", one national "973 Plan" prophase special project and one national social science major project. Won the first National Outstanding Youth Science Fund talent project in Xinjiang. 36 achievements won the ninth philosophy and social science award of Xinjiang Autonomous Region, including 6 first prizes; 1 achievement won the excellent achievement award of the State Commission for democracy and people's livelihood; 2 research and consultation reports were directly adopted by the government and rated as excellent consultation reports; 29 achievements won the ninth Natural Science excellent achievement award of Xinjiang University. The school has 1702 full-time teachers, including 203 professors, 625 associate professors, 843 masters, 419 doctorates, 104 doctoral supervisors and 558 master supervisors. There are 2 national and 9 autonomous teaching teams, 3 innovation teams (including cultivation) of the Ministry of education, and 7 research and innovation groups of the Education Department of the autonomous region. The library is the Provincial Central Library of China's Higher Education Document Guarantee System (CALIS), with a total volume of 2.765 million books and digital resources of 41000 GB. The campus network and CERNET main node in Xinjiang, Xinjiang education regional network control center and Urumqi education man have been built. It has a modern digital library and a first-class multifunctional gymnasium in Northwest China.
