Hunan Agricultural University was founded on October 8, 1903, initially named xiuye school. It has gone through the stages of private xiuye senior agricultural vocational school, Hunan Provincial xiuye agricultural and Forestry College and Hunan Agricultural College. In March 1951, Hunan xiuye agricultural and Forestry College and Agricultural College of Hunan University were merged to form Hunan Agricultural College. In November of the same year, Chairman Mao Zedong wrote the name of the college himself. In February 1994, it was renamed Hunan Agricultural University. The school is located in Furong district, Changsha City, covering an area of 2.27 square kilometers. It has beautiful East Lake in the north and beautiful Liuyang River in the south. The air is fresh and the environment is elegant.

After a hundred years of vicissitudes, he has changed his name several times, and has always been steadfast. The university has developed into a teaching and research university with the characteristics of agriculture and the comprehensive development of agriculture, engineering, arts, science, economics, management, law, medicine, education and art. It is a provincial key university jointly built by the Ministry of agriculture and the people's Government of Hunan Province. It has been listed as the first batch of pilot units for the construction of New Rural Development Research Institute by the Ministry of education and the Ministry of science and technology, and has been selected into the national "central and Western University basic capacity building program" In 2012, it entered a batch of undergraduate enrollment. The university has a graduate school, 20 professional colleges, 1 independent college, 71 undergraduate majors, 2 specialist majors, 8 first-class disciplines authorized by doctoral degree, 18 first-class disciplines authorized by master's degree, 7 categories authorized by master's degree, and 10 mobile post doctoral research stations.
