Founded in 1940, Beijing University of technology, formerly known as the "Academy of natural sciences" born in Yan'an, is the first university of science and engineering founded by the Communist Party of China. It is one of the national key universities since the founding of new China. The first batch of graduate schools were set up, and the first batch of graduate schools entered the ranks of the national "211 Project" and "985 Project". It is now under the Ministry of industry and information technology. In the past 70 years, the development of the school has always been highly valued and strongly supported by the party and the state. Li Fuchun, Xu Teli, Li Qiang and other proletarian revolutionaries of the older generation successively served as the main leaders of the school. In the autumn of 1942, Comrade Mao Zedong personally inscribed the name of the Academy of natural sciences. In 1949, the school moved to Beijing. In 1952, the school changed its name to Beijing Institute of technology, becoming the first National Defense Industrial College in New China. In the same year, the Aviation Department of the University was transferred to participate in the establishment of Beijing Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (now Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics), the metallurgy department was transferred to participate in the establishment of Beijing Institute of iron and steel (now Beijing University of science and Technology), and the Mining Department and specialized subjects were transferred to participate in the establishment of Central South University of mining and Metallurgy (now Central South University). In 1988, the University changed its name to Beijing University of technology. After years of development, today's Beijing University of technology has been in the forefront of domestic research universities in disciplines, teaching staff, personnel training, scientific research and other aspects, ranking among the first-class universities of science and technology in China. In 2012, the university first entered the QS World University in the UK, which has wide influence in the world. It ranked "top 100 Asian universities" and "top 500 world universities", and ranked 13th (tied) among the 19 Chinese universities selected.

The school has Zhongguancun campus, Liangxiang campus, Xishan experimental area, Zhuhai Campus and Qinhuangdao campus; it has 19 professional colleges and education research institutes, basic education institute, continuing education institute, higher vocational and technical college and Zhuhai University. The University adheres to aiming at the major national strategic needs and the forefront of world science, technology and education development, vigorously implements the discipline characteristic development strategy of "strengthening the region, promoting credit and expanding the sky", and forms a discipline pattern of paying equal attention to science and engineering, and coordinating the development of Engineering, science, management and literature. The university has 4 national key first-class disciplines, 5 national key second-class disciplines, 3 National Key Cultivation disciplines, 19 post doctoral mobile stations, 22 doctoral degree authorization points of first-class disciplines and 38 master's degree authorization points of first-class disciplines. Among them, 5 disciplines including engineering, materials, chemistry, physics and mathematics have entered the top 1% of ESI International disciplines, and 6 national key laboratories, There are 7 key laboratories and 2 engineering research centers of the Ministry of education, 14 Beijing key laboratories and 5 engineering technology research centers, 1 Beijing Laboratory and 3 National Defense Key Subject laboratories.

In the long-term process of running the school, the school has always shared the same breath and destiny with the party and the state, and is committed to the research of national defense science and technology. The school has created many "firsts" in the history of new China, such as the first TV transmitting and receiving device, the first two-stage solid high-altitude exploration rocket, the first light tank, etc. The school represents the national level in the fields of national defense science and technology such as precision strike, efficient damage, mobile penetration, remote suppression, military information system and confrontation, and has obvious advantages in intelligent bionic robot, green energy, modern communication, industrial process control and other dual-use technologies. During the 60th anniversary of the National Day parade, the University participated in the equipment design and development of 22 square arrays, and the number and depth of participation ranked first in Colleges and universities in China. In the process of space rendezvous and docking between "Shenzhou-8" and "Tiangong-1" in the Beijing Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, the university has developed many technologies with excellent performance. The university has signed university level cooperation agreements with more than 180 universities in 49 countries and regions on six continents, and has signed student exchange agreements with more than 40 cooperative universities, including Munich University of technology, Aachen University of technology, Bowman National University of technology, Tokyo University of technology and Illinois University of technology, forming a global network of international exchanges and cooperation. The university has actively carried out scientific and technological cooperation with provincial and municipal governments and large enterprises. In particular, it has established a production university research consortium with military enterprises and institutions. The construction of Zhongguancun national defense science and Technology Park jointly built with Zhongguancun Development Group has started.
