Baotou vocational and technical college is located in Baotou, one of the first batch of civilized cities in China, which enjoys the reputation of "Pearl outside the Great Wall" and "grassland steel city". Now it is subordinate to the people's Government of Baotou City, and is one of the 100 Model Higher Vocational Colleges in China. At present, there are more than ten thousand students on campus, and the one-time employment rate in the past five years has reached more than 95%.

The predecessor of the college is Baotou machinery industry school, a national key secondary professional school founded in 1956. In 1994, it became one of the 10 pilot schools of Five-year Higher Vocational Education after junior middle school in China. In 1998, Baotou vocational and technical college was established with the approval of the State Education Commission, becoming one of the first 14 independent public higher vocational and technical colleges in China. In 1999, the college was changed from a college under the central government to a college jointly built by the central government and the local government. In 2006, it was put under the management of Baotou city.

In 2004, the college was determined by the Ministry of education and other six ministries and commissions to undertake the training and training of national skilled talents in short supply; in 2008, it was determined by the Bureau of science, technology and industry for national defense as the first batch of vocational education and training bases for National Defense Science, technology and industry; in the same year, it was determined by the Ministry of education and the Ministry of finance as the National Model Higher Vocational College.

The college has perfect teaching, scientific research equipment and public service system. There are three campuses in Jianhua, hudemulin and Beizhong. There are 11 teaching departments, including mechanical engineering department, electrical engineering department, vehicle engineering department, material engineering department, humanities and art design department, economic and trade management department, computer and Information Engineering Department, numerical control technology department, International Exchange College, social science department, physical education teaching and research department, as well as continuing education college and national vocational skill appraisal institute. It covers an area of 733600 square meters, with a construction area of 357200 square meters. The total value of fixed assets is 624 million yuan, of which the total value of teaching equipment is more than 131 million yuan. At present, the college has set up 51 majors.

The college has a high-level teaching staff. There are 484 full-time teachers with reasonable age and academic structure. Among them, 42.15% are teachers with senior professional titles above associate professor, 43.18% are teachers with master's degree or above, and 71.9% are teachers with "double quality". The college has been awarded the honorary titles of "national machinery industry backbone vocational college, school enterprise cooperation and talent training excellent vocational college", "national automobile industry backbone Vocational College", "League city level demonstrative employment training base".
