Qiannan Normal University for nationalities was established in March 2000 with the approval of the Ministry of education. It is also the first Upgraded Local University in Guizhou Province. Its history can be traced back to 1952. In 2007, the university received the Ministry of education's undergraduate teaching level evaluation and was awarded the "good" grade; in 2011, it was approved to become a postgraduate training unit for master of education; in 2012, it was approved by the Ministry of education to become a demonstration centralized training project of "national training plan for primary and secondary school teachers"; in 2013, it was awarded the provincial academician workstation; in 2012, it was approved by the Ministry of education to become a graduate training unit for master of education; In 2014, he joined the National Union of Applied Technology Universities (colleges) and became one of the 20 transformation and development case universities of the Ministry of education.

The school is located in Duyun City, the capital of Qiannan Buyi and Miao Autonomous Prefecture of Guizhou Province and an excellent tourist city in China. The campus covers a total area of 9013000 square meters and the total area of school buildings is 455200 square meters. The school nestles up to Lianhua Mountain in the East, Jianjiang River in the south, and the golden passage to the sea from Sichuan to Guizhou in the West - guigao highway, Xiamen Chengdu expressway, Guizhou Guangxi railway and Guiguang express railway.
