Founded in 1954, Shanghai Normal University became an undergraduate university in 1956. In 1981, it was designated as one of the first batch of master's degree awarding units by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council. In 1986, it was approved as a doctor's degree awarding unit by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council.
