Xi'an University of technology is the only university in Western China with the characteristics of textile and clothing. Its predecessor was the weaving department of Beijing Polytechnic College, which was founded in 1912. After that, it went through the development stages of the Department of textile of national Beiping University, the Department of textile of northwest United University, and the Department of textile of Northwest Polytechnic College. In 1978, Northwest Institute of textile technology was established under the Ministry of textile industry. In 1998, it was transferred to be jointly built by the central and local governments, mainly under the management of Shaanxi Province. In 2006, it was renamed Xi'an Engineering University with the approval of the Ministry of education. After more than 100 years of development, the university has become a university with distinctive characteristics of engineering, science, arts, management, economics, law, education, art and so on. The university is now the "excellent engineer education and training plan" University of the Ministry of education, a high-level university construction university in Shaanxi Province, and one of the first batch of universities approved by Shaanxi 2011 collaborative innovation center. In the long-term school running practice, more than 100000 senior technical talents have been trained, which has made important contributions to local, industrial and social economic development.

The school has two campuses, Jinhua and Lintong, covering an area of 1.08 million square meters. There are 13 teaching units, including the College of textile and materials, the College of mechanical and electrical engineering, the College of electronic information, the College of environmental and chemical engineering, the College of management, the College of fashion and art design, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, the College of science, the College of computer science, the College of art and engineering, the College of Applied Technology (the College of continuing education, China Australia International College), the Ministry of sports and the Ministry of Ideological and political education. At present, there are 57 laboratories, 8 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, 2 provincial and ministerial key laboratories, 1 provincial 2011 Collaborative Innovation Center, 5 provincial engineering technology research centers, 4 national and provincial industrial technology innovation strategic alliances, 1 provincial philosophy and social science research base, and 1 public service platform of the Ministry of education. There are more than 22000 students, including 18000 undergraduates and nearly 2000 postgraduates.

The university has 60 undergraduate specialties, including 4 national characteristic specialty construction points and 9 provincial characteristic specialty construction points. The university is one of the first batch of authorized units for bachelor's and master's degrees approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council. At present, the university has 1 joint training doctoral program, 10 first-class discipline master's degree authorized programs, 49 second-class discipline master's degree authorized programs, 4 master's professional degree authorized categories, and 18 master's professional degree authorized programs (including 11 engineering master's professional authorized fields). Shaanxi Province has one national key discipline, two provincial key disciplines and one provincial advantage discipline. There are 15 provincial teaching teams, 25 provincial excellent courses and bilingual teaching demonstration courses, and 9 provincial talent training mode innovation experimental areas. The university has domestic journals "Journal of basic science of Textile Universities" and "Journal of Xi'an University of technology" which are distributed nationwide.

The school has more than 1000 teachers. In recent years, more than 400 students have been sent abroad for exchange or joint training of double degree; more than 300 teachers have gone abroad for further study and exchange; more than 800 experts and scholars from abroad have been invited to teach, give lectures and visit the University; 3 Sino foreign cooperative education projects have been carried out; and more than 30 international scientific research cooperation projects have been undertaken.
