[plant morphology] perennial herb or shrub, 30-100cm high, with aroma when kneaded. The stem is erect, the upper part is much branched, the old branch is stout, nearly round; the young branch is square, densely covered with grayish yellow pilose. Leaves opposite, round to broadly ovate, 2-10 cm long and 2.5-7 cm wide, apex short pointed or obtuse, base cuneate or heart-shaped, margin with thick obtuse teeth or sometimes split, both sides hairy, especially on veins; petiole 1-6 cm long, hairy. Cymes densely pseudospike, densely pubescent; calyx tubular, 5-toothed; corolla purple, 4-lobed, anterior lobes extending forward; stamens 4, middle filaments with long hairs, anthers 1-locular. Nutlets subglobose, slightly compressed. Flowers are rare in China.
It is native to Asia, Philippines and other subtropical regions. It is mainly produced in Guangdong and Hainan in China.
