[plant morphology] Smilax China
Deciduous vine like shrub. The rhizome is massive, mostly transverse, with dilated and hard woody caltrop like protuberances, with hard fine roots at the apex, with pale yellow appearance and reddish section. Stem hard, there are inverted or plain hard prickles. Leaves alternate, leathery; leaves oblong to narrowly oblong, or ovoid, 3.5-8 cm long, 1.8-4.5 cm wide, apex acuminate or obtuse, base broadly cuneate, entire, upper green, glossy, lower pink white, veins 3; petiole 1-1.2 cm long; base sheathed, with 2 tendrils at the top of sheath. Umbel axillary; unisexual, allotype; total petiole 1.5-2 cm long, petiole 1-1.4 cm long; male perianth 6, light green yellow, long elliptic, stamen 6; female flower 4 mm long, staminode 6, ovary superior, long elliptic; stigma 3, involute. Berries globose, bluish black, ca. 7 mm in diam. The flowering period is April. The fruit period is from July to August.
It grows under hillside forest or in shrub forest. It is distributed in Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang, Fujian, Jiangxi, Hunan, Hubei, Sichuan, Guizhou, Henan and Shaanxi.
